Photos! Birdmonster - Club Spaceland May 12th, 2006

The Birdboys landed at Club Spaceland last night. What a glorious family reunion it was. I hadn't seen the guys since SXSW and was suffering from withdrawls.

I met up with Dave, Petey, Zach, and Justin over at Leela's (AWESOME Thai place right next to the venue for non LA-ers). We caught up with each other and than went over to the venue.

It was a very weird lineup paired with very weird sound last night. First up were the Bangkok 5 - who made glam punk look even worse than preconception. My friend Kelcey showed up just before the Takedown hit the stage and we retreated to the smoking room to get away from it.

Birdmonster hit the stage a little after 10:30 PM. They started things off with the fantastic build of "Ice Age." They immediately raced into "Cause You Can" and kept the energy brewing for the entire set.

The sound at Spaceland was unsually bad for the night. All you could hear was the high end of Peter's guitar, crunchy drums, and distant bass. I don't think the band could hear themselves on stage. Still I danced my little legs off in the front of the stage and eventually stole a tamborine and rocked out from "Alabama" to "Spaceman."

If you missed Birdmonster last night you will have a second chance as they play the AlterKnit Lounge TONIGHT at the Knitting Factory.

Leela Thai is perhaps the best Thai restaurant I've been to in this town. I am jealous to have missed Birdmonster. Even though the sound was bad, I'm sure it was still pretty great.

I don't usually go out of my way to post on blogs, but I felt the need to this time around. Really dig your site and I think it’s great to see a fellow Angelino fighting the good fight and getting the word out about some great bands…BUT, and I hate saying this because I have nothing but respect for people who get up on stage and bare the souls in front of a crowd, but Birdmonster was probably about the worst show I’ve seen in Los Angeles…period. Way too contrived…way too pop cute…Ice Age was like a strange emo, Boss rip off…way too much style over substance…I don’t know if these guys have any male fans, but I’d wonder if they’d even listen to their own album if they weren’t themselves…maybe I’m just bitter guy because all of them are better looking than me, but I think the best rock comes from who break hearts and get their hearts broken and men who can’t get laid…and Birdmonster up on stage looked like some mating dance for emo girls…Los Angeles needs the Silver Jews to come out here and put a little good old fashion depression back into the music scene…but then again, the guys looked like they were having fun up there and I guess that’s what it’s all about…
