New Music For The Mundays: The Broken West + Sparrow House

THE BROKEN WEST EVERY MONDAY IN JAN AT SPACELAND FOR FREE

[MP3] The Broken West - Down In The Valley

The Spring semester for The LA Indie Rock Scene is back in full swing. You know what that means? FREE RESIDENCIES!!!!!!

Hipsters all over Silverlake are studying their "Who's who in L.A. Music," the ragamuffins of Echo Park all have new scene hair (courtesy of mom), and Rite Aid's all over the eastside are completely tapped for ramen noodles and eyeliner. The anticipation is thick as a new trio of acts set up shop in eastside clubs for the next four mondays - TOTALLY FOR FREE.

Local heroes The Broken West (formerly The Brokedown) will be taking over the Spaceland Residency beginning TONIGHT. The band have had a lot of ups and downs in the last 6 months. After their recent signing to Merge Records in late summer, the band were forced to change their name for legal reasons. Indieblogheaven thinks they sound like Spoon, and Aquarium Drunkard has been raving about them for months.

The Broken West will release their Merge debut LP I Can't Go On, I'll Go On on Jan 23rd. The band will be touring much of 2007 and just confirmed dates with The Walkmen and RI Fav Ferraby Lionheart. Be sure to catch The Broken West TONIGHT at Spaceland with Mezzanine Owls.

[MP3] Sparrow House - When I Am Gone
[MP3] Sparrow House - The Reflection (w/ Red Hunter)

Jared Van Fleet of Voxtrot fame sent me a delightful email the other day about his project Sparrow House. Those of you who read GorillaVsBear religiously (Jax raises hand) are probably more than familiar with the project ("When I Am Gone" was Chris' #1 Most Played Song of 2006). I just got Sparrow House's self released debut EP - Falls in the mail today and might I say it is a superbly diverse record. Hard mountain to climb when you consider there are only 6 tracks in total.

In my internet browsing I also stumbled across another Sparrow House track "The Reflection" which features Austin, TX troubadour and good friend Red Hunter.

Shameless Plug Alert: Dont forget Rock Insider and The Fold are pleased to present Red Hunter's project Peter and The Wolf this Wednesday at Silverlake Lounge w/ Dodo Bird, The Lottery, and Briertone. tickets are just $8 [Read More]

Good work fella! I'm going to have to track down this Sparrow House E.P. - the odds of a UK release are pretty slim I guess :(
