[MP3] The Dodos - The Ball

The other night I found myself sitting around my friends apartment after a raging game of bowling (I came in last with a blistering score of 64). Somehow we got into a discussion about who the greatest contemporary guitarists were. There was heavy leaning towards all things Johnny Greenwood (Radiohead) and Greg Edwards (Failure, Autolux). I was reserved to watching the conversation but felt compelled to throw my hat into the ring by suggesting Meric Long of The Dodos be added to the list. Surprisingly a few people agreed.

The discovery of The Dodos unique bled of psychedelic folk pop - spear headed by Meric's INNNNNNNNSANE guitar playing, has been a highlight of my musical year. I would go as far to say "The Ball" (download above) is one of the best tracks I've heard all year.

The chatter on this band has been few and far between. Why the blog world has over looked is act is frickin' BEYOND me. I personally haven't seen a band with this much talent and skill in the longest time.

I have a feeling all that is about to change as The Dodos hit the road this fall first in support of Jennifer Gentle (Sub Pop) and later with The Akron Family. The band will also be releasing a new album - tentatively called "Vister" this fall.

If you read this blog: you should see this band on tour. END OF STORY. The Dodos come with one of the highest recommendations I could possibly give. I know my opinion doesn't count for peanuts against the Pitchfork's of the world, but as one lover of music to another: YOU SHOULD CHECK THIS BAND OUT. It might just make your day.

The Dodos will be playing Los Angeles August 14th at the 6th Street Warehouse.
