You Sunk My Battles Ship...

I'm so late on the Battles ship it's not even funny. The New York four piece are absolutely everywhere thanks to their juggernaut debut album Mirrored . I finally got my head out of the clouds enough to pick it up this weekend. Seriously, words cannot describe how BAD ASS this record is. So much of the indie world is plug & play. Everyone likes to say they think outside the box but most find a need to fall into one of several categories in order to survive in todays level music world. Labels call it branding. I call it music profiling. So very rarely do you find a band so willing an open to think waaaaaaay outside the box. Every year there is that one band that defines a whole new scene. I truly believe that Battles is that band for 2007. Pitchfork gave Mirrored a 9.1 rating. One of only two reviews on the site I whole heartedly agree with. "Atlas" has been stuck in my head for the past 4 days. Severely stuck. I seriously woke up this morning with that high pitched robotic voice and thundering drums reverberating in my sleep deprived brain. That song is sonic crack. I know it's bad for me but I seriously can't stop listening to it. Battles sound is distinctly different. I honestly can't think of another band out there that sounds like Battles. Maybe that's what I find so compelling about them. I've been in sore need of a musical change the past few weeks. Battles instantly found a niche in my tastes and floored it to 11. I found this great EPK for Battles on their myspace page. It dives deep into how the band formed and where the concept for their sound came from.
