Evangelicals - Hidden Track

Josh Jones of Evangelicals Shares His Hidden Track

Hidden Track is a weekly feature here on Rock Insider where we bug the publicists of today's hottest acts and have them tell their bands to choose another band/artist they feel is underrated or "hidden" and deserves some exposure.

Last week Heisenflei of The Pity Party shared her love of Lusk. This week Josh Jones of the insanely amazing psychedelic pop project Evangelicals makes his band pick. I featured Evangelicals earlier this month [read post]. The Norman OK based foursome are currently on the road in support of their new album The Evening Descends - which (if you ask me) is destined to be on numerous End Of The Year Lists.

Student Film Inspires, Makes Sense.
Josh Jones of the Evangelicals:

Four years ago I was living in Austin, playing in a band, and trying to duke it out with the other 28 billion local bands for gigs, press, and flyer space on local cafe bulletin boards. On Tuesday evenings I would traipse over to open-mic-night at a nearby coffee shop to perform new songs and attempt to get over paralyzing stage fright to a crowd of mostly annoyed college students. I had no friends, girls ignored me, I was drinking like a vagrant fish and worst, the band's success trajectory was in a free-fall. Is it possible to go backwards when you haven't gone anywhere to begin with? Madness! I picked up a few of those "how to make it in the music biz" self-help style books but found them to be mostly irrelevant and boring. What was I going to do with a lawyer, manager, whoever, when we couldn't even get a show at Beerland? It was around this time that a friend of mine told me about a cool new band called Student Film from my hometown that I should really check out. Check them out I did and alright, they were great! After listening to their stuff I searched around for more Oklahoma bands.... I hadn't lived in the state in a long while and since I'd been gone a whole load of cool new bands had cropped up and it was very exciting. This got me thinking about moving back... if Student Film and others could make rad music and have success in cheap-as-dirt Oklahoma, maybe I could too. I liked Austin but there was no chemistry between us. I moved back two weeks later.

Student Film's record, The Sleeping Giant, which came out last year is one of my favorite records of 2007. There's this sorta pounding, slow, tribal kinda beat behind most of the songs and Justin Rice's lyrics have a certain paranoia that I can identify with. Live they totally slay... I saw a Halloween show of theirs a couple of years ago where they played the first song in total darkness and flipped some scary looking red lights at the top of their second song.... very dramatic! This is a trick I immediately stole and used in every one of Evangelicals sets the entire next year. Check em out at

I'm happy to see someone talking about this band. I've been a fan of theirs forever. I've been lucky to play a handful of shows with them in OKC. They have a lot of fans here in San Diego.

Fuck Ya Josh! SF is an amazing band, I cannot understand how they have not broken huge yet.

ps- that halloween show was one of the handfuls I did while I was with them. They were as fun to play with as they were to watch.

This post got some nice play on Hype Machine. I'm an Oklahoma guy transplanted to NYC, so I was excited to see mention of Student Film. My now you surely know Mama Sweet. I think I miss them most. And The Deli.
