Jay Reatard Punching Some Kid In The Face

Jay Reatard (Memphis, TN)

I'm normally a nice person and I don't like to ever write negative things on this site. This site is for the love of music and not to trash on anyone. Although in this situation I really feel the need to say something is long overdue.

About a month ago I went out to see Jay Reatard with Mika Miko and Bad Parents at Eagle Rock Lanes. Mr. Free & The Satellite Freakout were added to the bill last minute and also played. You can view photos right here and here. I was really excited to see Jay Reatard for the first time.

The vibe of the night was...weird. The lights were on during most of the show and sound was questionable. Still, Mika Miko and Bad Parents rocked out like they owned the place. I thought Jay Reatard played a super energized albeit way too short set. Mr. Free & The Satellite Freakout played last and had some major technical issues that curtailed their set for 10 minutes while they tried to fix the bass & bass amp. An audience member suggested they borrow equipment from one of the other bands and get on with the show. There was a miscommunication about who was letting who borrow what leaving the poor dudes on stage to search aimlessly for replacement gear. They finally ended up going direct into the sound board.

Jay Reatard were not too happy AT ALL about people rifling through their stuff and let the band on stage know it. One of the guys marched on to the stage, set their gear right, and body checked the guitarist on his way off. The Jay Reatard crew then began yelling at anyone who would listen. Mr Free tried to apologize after the show to Jay Reatard and crew wouldn't have any of it. It came really close to breaking out in a full out brawl but thankfully there were people there to stop it.

I'm not pointing fingers. I'm not saying the confusion was any one person's fault. It was a rock show - miscommunication occurs, people get drunk, tempers flare, and shit inevitably happens. However, I totally think Jay Reatard and Co. handled the whole situation very VERY immaturely. It left a sour taste in my mouth and as a fan of Jay I felt completely and totally cheated.

I had decided to let it go and let bygones be bygones and not saying anything publicly - Then this video surfaced on YouTube.

Watch as Jay Reatard rips off some poor kids shirt and punches the overzealous fan in the face after the concert goer climbed up on stage for a closer experience. The incident took place at their show in Toronto. GorillavsBear has links and details right here.

Jay Reatard posted his two cents in a myspace blog saying that the unsuspecting chap had stepped on his pedals and had broken them. Still dude - THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO EXCUSE FOR THAT KIND VIOLENCE OVER A COMPLETELY SOLVABLE ISSUE. If the show didn't have security and you could tell the crowd was too riled up you should have said something to the audience before you started playing. If you're pedals were getting stepped on - MOVE THEM.

Granted I wasn't there and can't even begin to speculate on the situation at that particular venue. It seems like it was all blown way out of proportion by Jay Reatard's explosive anger.

What was once a dislike for Jay Reatard's action has now become cemented with this video. I'm officially boycotting of all his music until SOMEONE gets him in an Anger Management class. I love Jay Reatard's music - but I cannot support that kind of behavior.

People should not go up on stage uninvited. If they do, a punch in the chops, whether from a bouncer or the artist, should not be unexpected.

And will you turn that damn Black Angels song off. (please?)

The black angels song is in the player at the bottom of the page. all you have to do is click "off." itll be archived by tomorrow.

Dont rifle through peoples stuff if its not yours just because an audience member tells you to. That gear is there lively hood.

Blogger JAX said ... (April 21, 2008 6:14 PM) :

I totally get that. Like I said it was a miscommunication and Jay Reatard had every right to be upset. Its how they handled the situation after the fact that I found to be juvenile and uncalled for.

If Jay Retard was a rap star and someone tried to grab his mic, everybody would be saying that we should boycott his music, that hip-hop is to blame, etc.

I don't care if the kid whipped-out his jimmy and blew his AIDS-tainted load in Retard's face. You don't fucking punch fans. No matter how you slice it, this Retard is a broken douchenozzle for what he did.

With all the hardworking, fan-supporting, nice guy artists that can't catch a break there is no need to spend money, time, or energy on someone who propagates that kind of negativity and testosterone-fueled violence.

Well played JAX.

I was standing in the front row. The kid who got punched was pushed on to the stage and accidently knocked the chord out of his pedal. big deal. get over it. This isn't the first time I have seen him lash out at his fans or someone in his band. Why do people jump to his defence consistently? He gets pissed at people for having fun at his shows. You'd think people were going ape shit at his show. They weren't. I was standing right up front, no one was even pushing in to me. No monitor fell on his guitar players pedals, it almost did but people moved it before it could. It seriously pissed me off that he hit that dude, then nailed some girl in the face with an empty pitcher. Next time he comes here I'll save my dough. I'd rather go to a show where people can actually have fun with out babyishness and bullshit.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (April 22, 2008 10:05 AM) :

I was also in the front row, and there certainly WAS a lot of moshing and everybody went ape-shit... before the first song was over, the giant black platform for the monitors was being passed through the air like it was crowd surfing. I'm not defending Jay... he went about it the wrong way. But the way things were set up at the Silver Dollar, and with the amount of idiots that showed up at the show, this mess was bound to happen.

thanks for posting this JAX, i'm glad you said something. this is certainly inexcusable behavior, i will avoid his music like the plague from here on out.

You should be punched just for being at a Jay Retard show. Chubby scene kids!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (April 22, 2008 9:25 PM) :

all you motherfuckers with wilco albums are shocked that a real rock and roll band isn't necessarily full of nice spineless sensitive dudes that let people fuck with their equipment PUNCH EVERYBODY IN THE FACE JAY

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (April 24, 2008 12:38 PM) :

whatever, their music sucks,
nothing new.
nothing innovative, i think he needs to punch people in the face to stay memorable.

boring. dan burke is boring too.

fuck retro music, next time i see jay reatard im jerking off at home to classical music.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (April 24, 2008 11:35 PM) :

people should never pay and always bum rush through the doors at Jay Reatard shows, then throw bricks and used needles at this dude.

this guy’s career will totally nosedive if clubs & promoters start associating him with “people will show up, not pay, rush past security, and throw heavy / pointy / contaminated things at the stage”

let’s make it happen people! we can do it!

let’s get some tshirts and buttons printed up.

Blogger JAX said ... (April 25, 2008 8:55 AM) :

Why would you go to a show to throw bricks at someone? That's awful. Like I said before. I dont condone violence at shows or constant anger. Im pretty sure even Jay reatard doesnt deserve a brick to the face.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (April 28, 2008 12:47 PM) :

jay reatard totally deserves bricks thrown at his face. He an a-number-1 asshole, and he really wants to be gg allin, let's give him what he's after.

hurt this guy.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (April 29, 2008 7:38 PM) :

Jay Reatard is that garage jerk that you're supposed to throw bottles at while he's playing, right?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (April 30, 2008 11:58 AM) :

quit being a wimp. He shouldn't let people walk all over his equipment and it has always been a rule that if you get on stage and disrupt the performance you should expect to get punched.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (May 03, 2008 10:38 AM) :

the only real disruption to this show was when Jay Reatard, huge pussy, refused to finish his set and walked off the stage. My guess is he was afraid the audience was going to tear him to pieces for hitting that random dude.

That's fine, if you're a coward, but if you're that kind of wuss and you can't play play after you embarrass yourself and lose your temper, then refund the people their money.

Jay Reatard didn't refund anybody jackshit, no matter what he claims in his blog.

anyway, Jay Reatard is just average musically anyway. He's popular because of his rowdy live show. He should be paying people to throw bottles at him and jump on stage and get into fights with him at every show, because that's what people are really coming out to see.

Frankly that's all he's really got going for him.
