3 BUCKS FOR GAS! JEEBUS!

FEATURED MP3S
Soulwax - "NY Excuse (Nite Remix)" (MP3) - taken from Music.For-Robots.com
Tom Vek - "If You Want (Playground Dub)" (MP3)

I let my gas tank wither to well below my yellow fuel light the past few days. I was waiting to get paid (man o man I almost overdrafted **phew). I pulled into the arco down the street from my house and WTF!!! $2.99 for 1 gallon of regular unleaded!! Don't think me evil, but I let out a barrage of cuss words that made the poor soccer mom next to me deal with a slew of questions from the kids in the backseat of her minivan afterwards.

At this rate we'll be paying well over 3 dollars come Sept. I remember the good ole days in 2000 when i could get gas for $1.24 per gallon. Sigh....those days are long since numbered. I'm glad I bought a fuel efficient car.

More music to stick it to the man with. Lots of great shows going on tonight. Silversun Pickups last night of their residency is TONIGHT at Spaceland. Hot Like (A) Robot are playing Club Moscow tonight, and I will be staying in (sorry everyone. A girl's gotta sleep)

Just finished reading Cats Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut. HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!!! I also recommend getting out and going hiking (the best for stress!).

Much love. talk soon.

OKGO - A MILLION WAYS TO BE COOL

FEATURED ARTIST: OK GO

OK Go - "A Million Ways" (stream)
OK Go - "Do What You Want" (stream)
official site
myspace

I'll admit it, OK Go have been a guilty pleasure of mine since my college radio days. Rocking the mic at The KAGJ in Ephraim, UT (middle of bum fucking nowhere if you don't know where that is) and spinning "Get Over It" and "You're So Damn Hot" incessantly were definitely highlights of my time spent in PODUNK, USA.

Alas, 3 years passed and I hadn't heard anything new. I was beginning to wonder would I ever hear their delightful pop guitar riffs again and **POOF out of seemingly thin air (the internet has a way of doing that) popped this AMAZING video of OK Go dancing in their backyard.

The video is for their single "A Million Ways" off their NEW (yay!) album Oh No, which hits stores everywhere TODAY. The DIY video was shot all in one take and features probably the best choreography in a music video I have ever seen (Sorry Britney, Christina, and Fatboy Slim. You lose out on account of OK Go's hilarious move I'm now fondly calling "The Matrix") .

This album is so much more than hilarious choreography and an 8 mm in a backyard. Oh No features some of the most radio-friendly tracks I have heard in a while. With Oh No the band premieres a more organic, less orchestrated sound. You won't find any over-the-top production on this record. I for one cannot stop listening to tracks like "Do What You Want," "Invincible," and of course "A Million Ways."

OK Go are currently on tour with fellow Chicagoans and label-mates The Redwalls.

OK Go will be playing The Roxy Theatre Sept 9th. Get your tickets now because this show will sell out!

FORM OF ROCKET SHAT ON MY RUGS TOO

Form Of Rocket - "Danger Snake" (MP3)
Form Of Rocket - "Sack Of Smashed Assholes" (MP3)
official site
myspace

Sorry for the lack of updates over the weekend. I have been trying to get a few websites back up and running. I did venture out of my house on Sat. to see Shellac and Autolux with my roomie Jenni. It was at The Echo which usually means one thing for me: Claustrophobia. I fought through it, saw two kick ass bands, and met some new friends in the process (hey fellers). Shellac was amazing and made me nostalgic for one of my hometown bands: Form Of Rocket.

I first started listening to this amazing Salt Lake City band when I was in college. Trust me, there was NOTHING to do in Ephraim, UT in between classes except go down to the farms, harass wild turkeys, and listen to SLC indie-core.

Form of Rocket are the kind of band who kick your teeth in and make you feel like shat because you haven't practiced nearly as much as they have. Form of Rocket combine raw energy, incessant screaming, crazy time signatures, and intricate guitars into a beautiful shit sandwich that I gladly would eat.

Download the tracks above and you'll understand what the fuck I'm talking about.

Tonight: Eisley FREE SHOW at the Troubadour. Its first come first serve and you have to download a ticket from Yahoo! Music. I recommend getting there at least two hours before the show if you want to get in.

Also FREE tonight is Satisfaction and The Valley Arena at The Silverlake Lounge. I'll more than likely be popping my head in for this show. Both LA based bands I absolutely love. This is also The Valley Arena's last show in LA for the next few months.

The Valley Arena's new album, Take Comfort In Strangers, recently got a 5/5 review in AP Magazine. Kudos dudes.

Off to work and not a moment to spare.

P.S. friend of mine has told me I am required to go see the 40 Year Old Virgin. If I wanted to see a 40 year old virgin I would just go home to Utah for the weekend. Anybody else see it? Any good?

BLAH BLAH BLOGGER FRIDAYS

FEATURED ARTIST: RANDOM
official site

FRIDAY QUARRY MIX BELOW...
Come'On You Lazy Ass!! You can scroll for 12 free tracks. Jeebus.

I have a sleep hangover today. You know when you sleep waaaay too long the night before so for the next day you have a soupy headache paired with stabbing pain behind the eyes. I wish I could be so cool as to say "I drank myself silly and danced till 2 am at Loose Tooth last night" but no. I was asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow at 9:30 pm. Hooray for my social life!

I found out an interesting bit of trivia today. I SHARE THE SAME BIRTHDAY AS OSAMA BIN LADEN. No fucking joke! March 10th. Also born on that day...JAMES EARL RAY (assasinated Martin Luther King Jr.) Check it out here. Now I know why I have serial killer tendencies.

It's Friday and that means it's time to delight you with another Rock Insider Quarry Mix chock fulla' new music you can download to your desktop and forget where you found it.

Featured artist on the mix: Random - an amazing electronica solo artist from Ireland. Random is the brain child of Darragh Random. I came across his music on MySpace (honestly if you dont have a myspace profile where have you been in the last 2 years). After a chain of messages and IM conversations he coerced me to hear his new tracks. I fell in love.

Random's music is delightfully simplistic, slighty uptempo, and deliciously melacholy. It's perfect for driving cross country or up PCH in slighty foggy conditions. Random's music puts me in a conteplative yet blissful mood that gets me through my workday. Siiiigh.....

Other great music on the mix... Editors, Engine Down, A Rare Tom Vek B-Side, The Spinto Band, The Vacation, Bedtime For Toys, The Knife, Silversun Pickups, Joe Purdy, Fucking incredible DFA 1979 remix (courtsey of Music.For-Robots)

THE SPACE TALE OF THE MAESTRO

I've come to the fast realization that I need a camera for my nightly adventures. Especially when you put me, my friend Heather, and roomate Jenni in the same room with one very over zealous maestro.

Last night the 3 of us, accompanied by new found friend Summer, hit Spaceland to see Silversun Pickups/Sound Team. Dear lord, Im converting to the cult of Pikul.

Silversun Pickups hit the stage around 11:30 PM. Thanks to a heavy dose of chain-smoking and artichoke heart salad I was in a bleary-eyed, half awake state. My first introduction to the band's live show was a much needed pick-me-up.

I wasnt the only one groovin' to the 'Pickups. Front row center in the packed house was a character I'm now fondly calling "The Maestro." The Maestro - an older gentlemen with bleached white hair all dressed in black conducted the band through their set. Jumping, wavying, agreeing, singing, swaying the ENTIRE TIME with a stoic ponch in his lip and curl in his brow.

Just imagine 4 girls giggling uncontrollably at the sight of the crazy conducter in action. I was laughing so hard I almost peed my pants. What made it even better is I dont think the band even knew him.

At times like that I desperately WISH I had a digital camera so I could share the hilarity with all of you. The Maestro was the certainly one of the highlights of the show but couldn't outshadow Silversun Pickups' amazing songs, happy-go-lucky attitude, and delightfully spontaneous live show.

Silversun Pickups will be playing Spaceland EVERY WED. in August for just $5. You can pick up their new EP, Pikul - feat. "Kissing Families" by clicking here.

I NEED A PICK-ME-UP TODAY

Silversun Pickups - "Kissing Families" (MP3)
official site
myspace

Somebody break out the coffee - cuz boy am i beat. I'm mad as hell at myself for not making it out to see the Spinto Band at Spaceland. I was sick as hell and very very tired. I ended up falling asleep really early.

Life cool but bordering on broke stinks. Tickets were cheap but alas the rock insider's pockets arent lined with perverbeal cash.

Tonight however, I will be heading out to Spaceland to see Silversun Pickups. My friend Heather got me psyched on this band when she added "Kissing Families" to a mix she gave me. 18 tracks in the mix and this is the one that stood out the most.

I have been going through another one of my 'emo' phases. The first thing I heard when I threw on this track on was Get-Up Kids style vocals and breakdowns paired with cursive-esque cello and alt country saddle creek twang. Umm yeah, I was pretty stoked.

"Kissing Families" is one of those track you can throw on and stand to repeat 4 times in a row. It just keeps getting better and better everytime you hear it. I hope y'all enjoy

Silversun Pickups are doing a wed. night residency ALL MONTH LONG at Spaceland. Tickets are only 5 bucks. Even I can swing that.

Newly signed Capitol artist Sound Team will also be playing tonight so get there early!

Always let me know what you think. love email jax@rockinsider.com

GO SEE ENGINE DOWN / BELLA LEA TONIGHT

FEATURED ARTIST: ENGINE DOWN
official site
MySpace

Short post. Im swamped with work and cant break away for a few minutes to delight all you rockinsider phreaks with my witty prose (I know you're getting sick of my synonyms, antonyms, and dumb metaphors anyway)

Im going to keep this short, direct, and sweet.

GO SEE ENGINE DOWN TONIGHT AT THE TROUBADOUR.

GO BUY TICKETS. GO BUY A SHIT LOAD OF MERCH. GO SUPPORT THIS BAND.

Engine Down are ending it on a high note and hanging up their guitars after this tour. I have been a HUGE FAN of this band since I was a teenager. Engine Down were one the first bands to spark my interest in the indie music world. I used to sit in my college dorm listening to Demure and fantasize abt moving to LA (in a non dirty way you sickos). Now Im out here, working in the music industry, and spreading the joy and isnpiration of music to others. Joy and inspiration that bands like Engine Down gave me in the beginning.

Nothing but respect for every member of this amazing band. Good luck guys.

PS. Come early tonight to see BELLA LEA. I can honestly say from experience that singer Maura Davis' voice will make all those troubles go away.

kk back to work. See you tonight.

FEELING BETTER..NO WORRIES..

FEATURED MP3S
Mobius Band - "The Loving Sounds Of Static" (MP3)
Absentee - "Rainy Days Swimming" (MP3)
The Magic Numbers - "Forever Lost" (Stream)
The Lovekevins - "Blame The English" (MP3)

My friend Mike had this photo on his MySpace profile and I had to post it. It made me chuckle. If I were driving up the street and saw this sign I'd immediately break out some "2 Legit 2 Quit" on my iPOD.

Last night I went home and slept. Damn stomach bug. My roomate Jenni made me lemon ginger tea (which I highly recommend as a cure-all for nausea) and as soon as my head hit the pillow I was out. Feeling much better this morning. No more painfully distended belly. No more feeling like I gotta toss cookies.

I tell you though, the state of music today is sometimes enough to make me wretch. When I find an amazing handful of artists true to their craft and genuine in their motives my zest and passion for music grows a little bigger. Trust me, you will always find genuine talent if you look. Don't be told what to think or what is "cool" at the moment.

No real feature today. Just some great music to download that I hope renews your zest and passion for music.

Tonight Butch Walker After Party at Loose Tooth for all those interested. For me, more much needed R&R. Ciao!

VHS OR BETTA THAN YO' MOMMA!

VHS Or Beta - "Night On Fire" (MP3)
VHS Or Beta - "Night On Fire (Phil Kieran Mix)" (MP3)
official site
myspace

Damnit. I'm pretty sure I caught a bug. My tummy has been killing me for 2 days now. Last night I had to skip King Elementary and Marjorie Fair for the sake of sleep. I needed to rest my belly. I was however coaxed out to the opening of the Vanguard to see VHS or Beta.

VHS Or Beta were absolutely fantastic! Imagine a dirty south jam band that plays dance music better than your momma's disco. Songs were catchy as fuck, fun to dance to (although I didn't do much dancing), and left me saying "whaaa!"

I had a chance to talk with the band after the show and they were all incredibly nice guys. Must be all that southern charm (the band hails from Louisville, KY). VHS or Beta will be in town for a few more days to shoot a video and then... who knows? The moon maybe?

You can download the title track from their 2004 release "Night On Fire" along with a nifty lil' remix I found on the world wide web above.

Tonight Liz Phair Acoustic performance at the Troubadour and possibly the Knitting Factory for Big Business.

I'll be drinking alka-seltzer cocktails all night long.

Someone Come Rub My Belly...

The Rakes - "Retreat" (Phones Remix) (MP3)
The Rakes - "Terror" Extended Mix (MP3)
official site

I'm feeling so under the weather today. I woke up this morning (no hangover THANK YOU. I didn't drink last night) with a knot in my stomach that just won't go away. The only thing that seems to be making my tummy feel better are these new remixes i got for The Rakes.

I featured The Rakes on my old blog abt 3 months ago. I absolutely fell in love with their satirical energy that makes you want to clap your hands, dance all night, and slug the dumbass scenester next to you whose NOT enjoying himself for the sake of looking "cool."

Their dynamic live show has garnered much praise in their hometown of London and has allowed them to tour with such bands as Bloc Party and landed them a spot at this years' Redding/Leeds festival.

Their single "Retreat" is available now in CD and 7" vinyl through Moshi Moshi Records in the UK. You can purchase it right here.

Oh, and did I mention They just signed to Dim Mak Records here in the U.S? Steve Aoki I heart you. First Neon Blonde and now The Rakes!?!! You spoil me. Bring them back to LA. I'll show those brits a good time...

Tonight King Elementary and Marjorie Fair at the Troubadour, then off to see VHS or Beta and the gran re-opening of the Vanguard. I heard something abt free sushi, free valet, and open bar. I'm so there even if my tummy isnt.

MEH, IT'S FRIDAY

Soo Friday is normally when I unleash my weekly Mixtape on the world. But quite frankly Im a bit too lazy today to even think about uploading songs and making them available for your download pleasure. Screw off.

My friemd Heather just turned me on to this new fangled thing called AIMFight.com. I kick EVERYONES ASS AT IT. Try and find my sn and look it up. I dont give that shit out. I kicked Ultragrrrl's ass earlier today.

LET'S HEAR IT FOR THE ORCHESTRA!!

The Fury

Last night's show was incredible minus a few sets backs. Show got to a late start (only a miraculous 8 minutes late) because the show before us had a full orchestra and were taking forever to load out. First band didnt start loading in til 9:20 pm and hit the stage at 9:37 pm. HUUGE thanks to Briertone and Kiev being troopers (they had to load in from the top of a huge hill) and to the stage managers at the club who got everything back on schedule.

The crowd was awesome and most stayed through the last band. That's what I love to see. All the bands were amazing. Briertone I could watch everyday for the rest of my life and be content; Cavil At Rest keep getting better and better; The Stiletto Formal rocked my socks (thanks for all your help setting up guys and happy 21st birthday Shelly!) Kiev were fantastic; and The Fury played to a PACKED house spattered with industry and nailed it. Kudos

As for the second part of our event EMILIA FEST was a thawrty good time. I spanked the hell out of that girl. Happy 22nd Birthday Emilia!!!

I was running around like a crazy person so if I didnt see you last night and you were there let me know! Tell me what you thought of the bands, who you saw there... etc. I LOVE getting email! jax@rockinsider.com

Tonight I'll be out and about. Come find me. I dare you.
