Hump Day Picks With Justin - Birdmonster

Justin Tenuto - Birdmonster

Before you get all bent outta shape abt how HUMP DAY PICKS are only supposed to be with other bloggers - I suggest you check out Birdmonster's absolutely beer-larious BLOG. it's one of my daily read (or whenever one of the other boys get around to updating it).

Little known fact when I first started this HUMP DAY feature on my site back in October the very first person to HUMP with me was Birdmonster drummer extraordinaire Zach Winter [READ POST].

Well today I make it 2 for 4 as Justin - Bad Ass Birdmonster Bassist joins me in HUMP DAY PICKS. I only need to Hump with the final two (Dave/Peter I'm looking at you) to officially be a groupie.

ENJOY!

JUSTIN - BIRDMONSTER'S HUMP DAY PICKS

So, it's not really a hump day today, unless you had to work on Memorial Day, in which case you should probably fling shit at your boss's neck. But it is Wednesday and, if you're here reading this, you're probably at work anyway, fighting the good fight against Taylorism, conference calls, and scheduled cigarette breaks. In other words, we need to spread good cheer.

My humpday picks

1- The Way That Young Lovers Do (Van Morrison): Ah, yes. There was a time when I thought, when I could've swore, that Van Morrison was a black southen dude. Then I saw one of those daytime TV, three minute commercials for "Songs of the 60's" and say a disheveled white guy singing "Brown Eyed Girl." Anyway, that has nothing to do with this song; I just thought you might find it amusing. This is and will always be my favorite Van Morrison song from my favorite of his albums, which also happens to be in the top 5 greatest CDs ever made, somewhere below London Calling.

2- London Calling (Clash): Because it's better than the Bible. Or, at least, the DaVinci Code.

3- Shoes Without Holes in the Toes: No, no. They are not an emo band. I just stepped in a puddle in my only pair of new shoes and, amazingly, my socks remained dry. Also acceptable: galloshes.

4- Tap-Tap, Click-Click- Division Day [MP3] I wanted to put Lights Out on there, but you can't listen to it for free, so I went with this one. These guys are incredible on every level. I sleep with a picture of Ryan under my pillow.

5- Judge Joe Brown- When I was in my Unemployed,-don't-have-cable,-won't-take-off-my-robe-and-am-about-to-eat-a-third-peanut-butter-an-banana-sandwich phase, I watched a lot of Judge Joe Brown. It's fun to scream "You tell 'em Joe!" at your TV while your neighbors look at you and shake their heads in pity.

JAX - THE ROCK INSIDER'S HUMP DAY PICKS

1. Walter Meego - Weekday [MP3] What a perfect pick for a hump. This song makes me want to go to a mall and play Dance Dance Revolution.

2. Chinese Chicken Salad - I've had it for lunch the last three days in a row. It never gets old and it always tastes good.

3. Echo Park Lake - I'm on like this....what do you call it.... "FITNESS THING" anyway the past 5 mornings I have blissfully been running around Echo Park Lake and I've decided it's one of my favorite places on Earth. If I ever get capped by a stray bullet in a random drive by shooting on Montana, I want the would-be-no-gooders to hide my body in the lily pond. Siiiigh soo pretty...

4. Funny Song Names By Electro Pop Bands - They seem to be getting better and better

You Say Party We Say Die! - Apocalypse Meow [MP3]
Cansei De Ser Sexy - Let's Make Love And Listen To Death From Above [MP3]

5. Sound Team's "Your Eyes Are Liars" Video - you can watch it tomorrow over at GorillavsBear. Hooya!

Phoenix....Um.....DAMN...Seriously

FEATURED ARTIST: PHOENIX

[MP3] Phoenix - Long Distance Call
[MP3] Phoenix - Napoleon Says

So a little over two months ago I downloaded "Long Distance Call" from a blog. I totally forget which one. I remember downloading it becuase Phoenix were the only band playing Coachella I thought I had never heard of. A quick peak at my iTUNES and I discovered they had a track on the Lost In Translation soundtrack. Kudos. And Kudos to "Long Distance Call" for being the song most oftenly sung in JAX's shower.

I don't know why I waited so long to make a post about Phoenix. Maybe it's because RockInsider is slowly swinging towards covering just upcoming Los Angeles shows and LA based bands. Or maybe its because Im just lazy (I think it's the latter of the two).

Needless to say, I just got the Parisian quartet's new album, It's Never Been Like That, in the post today and I don't think I've loved an album SOOO MUCH so quickly since...well yesterday...but DAMNIT! is it sooo good. So fuck y'all... get off me and my definitive phrases.

There. I've said my peace. Now go buy this album right now so you can say you had it before they got fucking huge and we're all over Rolling Stone, Spin, Jeopardy, and did guest spots on The Surreal Life.

New Music For The Mundays: Let's Go Sailing

FEATURED ARTIST: LET'S GO SAILING
official site
myspace

[MP3] Let's Go Sailing - All I Want From You Is Love
[MP3] Let's Go Sailing - Icicles

A few days ago I was introduced to Miss Shana Levy and her absolutely wonderful collection of songs under the moniker Let's Go Sailing. I remember hearing about the band through Matt over at You Ain't No Picasso back in January. Her sweet voice filled with innocence and hope layed over piano driven indie pop and fantastic swells instantly won favor with me.

Let's Go Sailing began back in 2002 after Shana left the indie pop outfit Irving to focus on her own project. The project soon recorded demos with famed producers Chris Chandler (Flaming Lips/Modest Mouse/Elliott Smith) and Rod Cervera (The Rentals/Weezer) and in 2006 are putting the final touches on a full length LP The Chaos In Order - Due out in 2007.

Let's Go Sailing will play the Troubadour TONIGHT with Bedroom Walls (CD Release Show) and Lavender Diamond. Tickets are still available for $8. The project just announced another show this Sunday June 4th, at the Little Radio BBQ with Birdmonster and Run Run Run.

A limited self release of 3 demo versions from the "The Chaos in Order" is also available on the band's website and at independent record stores in Los Angeles including Sea Level Records and Amoeba.

I have to say I have been listening to this record on repeat for days while I have been apropriately "Martha Stewart-dizing" my new apt. I can't get enough. I'm really looking forward to seeing them TONIGHT.

The Hunting Of The Eskimo And Return Of Shoegaze

FEATURED ARTIST: ESKIMOHUNTER

[MP3] Eskimohunter - Walking Tour Of Space
[MP3] Eskimohunter - Surfing At 32 F

I don't write about new music like I should anymore. It's a flaw in the design of Rock Insider I am quickly mending. I get in my ruts and everything sounds mundane. NO MORE I SAY! NO MORE!

Today's new music fix - ESKIMOHUNTER. I have been putting off featuring this band mainly because I am a huuuuuge fan and they are dear friends. I wanted to wait for a perfect opportunity. Secondly, I've been putting this off because I didn't feel I could word a post worthy of Mr. Jason71's Bad Ass-ness. I'll do my best.

Eskimohunter is the brain-child of the honourable Jason71, a multi-format artist from deep in the heart of downtown Los Angeles. The project first began in 2002 and after a few evolutions released an EP, Musical Snow Globe Machine, in Jan. 2005. The album is shoegaze rock in all its epic glory. The project stresses simple layered sound to create its blissful drone. Throw in a dash of pop harmonies, A strong multimedia presence, and you have a truly 71 brand of music.

The band is currently revamping it's lineup by adding Jenni Tarma on bass (JUNIOR / SENIOR, HAR MAR SUPERSTAR), John Riccardi on guitar & Christian McCall on drums. Rehearsals are underway for upcoming performances.

Hump Day Picks With Jeff - Central Village

ITS HUMP DAY AGAIN. YAYYY!!!!! It's everyone's favorite fornicating feature where two bloggers pick 5 things that keep 'em sane mid week.

I have been slacking on the Hump Day Picks - I blame lack of motivation.

Never fear! We're back in action this week and humping with me today is Jeff from Central Village. I ran into Jeff while I was in New York City a few weeks ago. I have been a long reader of his fantastic blog about the NYC scene. Sweet guy too.

ENJOY THE HUMP PICKS!

JEFF - CENTRAL VILLAGE HUMP DAY PICKS

1. How I Met Your Mother - Best sitcom since Seinfeld. Flat out. Such a smart show. Anything that canpull out an 18 month old song like Bloc Party's 'Modern Love' at theemotional climax of the season finale and make it work has got me around itsfinger.

2. Tokyo Police Club Mentioned here and there on blogs of late, but I've got a really goodfeeling this band is all anyone's gonna be talking about come CMJ.

Tokyo Police Club
- Nature Of The Experiment [MP3]

3. Nintendo Wii - Even if you've never played a video game before, you'll end up wanting oneof these by Christmas.

4. The Macbook - About to buy my first Mac ever after being raised on PCs since birth. Blackor White?

5. The unironic appreciation of mainstream pop-punk. Just saying...

JAX - THE ROCK INSIDER'S HUMP DAY PICKS

1. Lily Allen - There's just something so incredibly endearing about her voice, her intonation, her delivery. "LDN" oozes personality and reminds me of a warm happy day walking down a city block with some kind of frozen dessert. flawless.

Lily Allen - LDN [MP3]

2. Bruises - I guess I have to learn to love them. Im positively covered from head to toe in bruises from moving.

3. Headlights - Matt over at You Ain't No Picasso turned me on to this band. I am positively in love and forever in debt to the KY boy.

Headlights - TV (Highly Recommend!) [MP3]

4. Boys and Car Trouble - Its all I bitch about these days and all I bitch about on this blog, So as of today I've decided to Never bitch about EITHER EVER AGAIN. Quite liberating. Who wants to go sulk in a giant stein of the most carb loaded beer with me?

5. Running into the guys in Division Day everywhere. My roommate and I keep running into the guys in Division Day everywhere. Twice yesterday! What are you guys stalking us or something? yeesh :-P Their playing with Sound Team and Someone Still Loves You, Boris Yeltsin On June 15th. Im stoked.

Moving Day, Moving Pains, All Men Suck, and Gomez...Yes That Gomez

FEATURED ARTIST: GOMEZ
official site

[MP3] Gomez - How We Operate

I listened to Gomez's newest album, How We Operate, as I was driving through the Virgin River Gorge in Arizona on my way to Utah last week. This British band's totally american country influenced made the looooooooooooong drive quite enjoyable. I felt a few of the songs were oddly placed on the album a found myself skipping around a bit, but on the whole it was fantabulous. The band have been cris-crossing the United States on tour and will be stopping in Los Angeles TONIGHT at the Avalon.

My roommate and I are semi-moved in to our new apt in Echo Park- the only problem is WE DONT HAVE POWER AND I'M JUMPING THROUGH MORE HOOPS THAN A FUCKING CIRCUS POODLE TRYING TO GET IT TURNED ON.

Los Angeles DWP have decided that since the previous tenants were deliquent on their bills I must now suffer to injustice of having to fill out effing papework, drive all the way downtown, show my fucking rental agreement, call the apt manager, call the property owner, and then once EVERY THING IS FUCKING PROCESSED THEN! they will turn my fucking lights on.

Im on a short fuse today so bare with me (I'm allowed to PMS on days like today) HELL YA! was great last night. Heather and I got really shitfaced in celebration of the joyous date of her birth. I broke out all the 80s vinyl I bought at a garage sale a few weeks back and played a solid set filled with the Lauper, Roxy Music, Yes, The Vapors, Go Gos, Corey Hart, And Falco's "Rock Me Amadeus."

p.s. all men suck. okay im bitter right now ....Im a bit of tard, everyone can say "I told you so" in unison. NOT ALL MEN SUCK just me and my attitude towards your whole kind right now. Im just being mean for the sake of being mean and its making me feel better. Deal, ya dig...

I'm going to go practice my hoop jumping...

Expect to hear many great things about this band in the coming months.

[MP3] Cavil At Rest - We Could Love
[MP3] Cavil At Rest - Who's There

I think I've started this post 5 times now and EVERYTIME my computer decides to be a 'tard and delete everything I had worked so hard to write. UGH!

It's okay, I'll just write it off as another case of the Mundays. Good thing I have music like Cavil At Rest's new EP to keep me semi-sane (We all know I'm slightly INSANE)

Cavil At Rest are an absolutely delightful band from Southern California - and by 'delightful' I'm mean insanely talented with great songs. Their new EP, Apples and Oranges, oozes positive energy while delivering pitch-perfect harmonies, infectious guitar, and a dance-worthy beat.

'We Could Love' is a simply gorgeous track. I've been using it to close out my DJ set for a few weeks now. People always come up and ask me who it is.

I have watched this band evolve over the last year or so. Everytime I see them they get exponentially better. Their live show - filled with enegy and audience involvement, simply can't be missed.

You can purchase Cavil At Rest's Apples and Orange EP on the band's myspace page, or at shows.

In Other News: I'm back from Salt Lake City. I had soo much fun playing with my new nephew MAX and chilling with my family at my brother Brett's wedding. I drove over 15 hrs yesterday so I'm a little tweaked from the road. I got a good night's sleep last night so hopefully I'll be okay to DJ at HELL YA! tonight.

I sign the lease and move in to my new apartment in Echo Park TODAY. WOOOT! It's in the Angelino Heights neighborhood and even comes with its own cactus-filled swimming pool.

Right now I am babysitting my 2 month old nephew who is totally adorable but in this record heat its down right miserable for the both of us. I just put him down for his nap.

HELL YA! IS BACK! TONIGHT AT THE ECHO! FREE!

HELL YA! NIGHT TONIGHT AT THE ECHO

HELL YA! ON MYSPACE

Heather and I took the month of April off from Hell Ya! so we could regroup after SXSW. Don't worry we're back with TWICE the action this month with two Hell Ya! Nights in two WEEKS!

We're kicking it off TONIGHT with live performances from Lemon Sun, The Outline, UV Tigers, and Grand Ole Party.

As Always TONIGHT'S SHOW IS FREEEEEEE!

LEMON SUN

[MP3] Lemon Sun - The Face

The pride of the eastside. Lemon Sun recently opened for The Killers at the Long Beach Arena and are masters of self promotion. I dont think I have walked into a coffee shop, street corner, record store, acupunture office without seeing their poster for tonight's show. AMAZING WORK!

THE OUTLINE

[MP3] The Outline
- Shotgun

The Outline are still relatively young but MAN do they make up for it in talent. They have been playing out in LA for a little over a year - trying to find their definitive sound. I think they finally have it.

GRAND OLE PARTY

[MP3] Grand Ole Party - Look Out Young Son

San Diego's Grand Ole Party got some serious soul. I am really excited to see this band performing live. I have been playing "Look Out Young Son" wayy too much these past few weeks. It's borderline obsessive and probably isn't healthy for me. This band is definately for fans of The Noisettes, and you don't have to book a ticket to merry old England.

UV TIGERS

[MP3] UV Tigers - Next Of Kin

UV Tigers are another great band from San Diego. From what I've been told of their live show I think we're in for a treat. They definately bring the energy.

Be sure to come next week's HELL YA! as well with live performances from Controlling The Famous, Hockey, and Asleep In The Sea. Its Heather's birthday as well!!!!!

New Music For The Mundays: The Vanity

FEATURED ARTIST: THE VANITY

[MP3] The Vanity - Eve
[MP3] The Vanity - Traveler

Denver natives The Vanity - comprised of three musically minded brothers and one talented vocalist, have been changing the face of the rock scene in Colorado for the past few years. Slowly but surely they have built up a following and a fair amount of indsutry buzz.

This month the band will release their first ever EP - Never Love A Stranger. I just got my very own copy of it and it's absolutely fantastic. The opening riff of "Eve" with its sweeping and seemingly effortless build sets the sonic tone for the entire record. Never Love A Stanger draws strong influence from all the giants of the 80s without losing sight of its own deconstructed indie glory. This is the first album I have heard from a developing act that has sucessfully married the progressive guitar stylings of 20 years ago with the uptempo pop glory of today (The first of course being The Killers with Hot Fuss).

The Vanity will embark on a west coast tour this week. Be sure to catch them this sunday at The Roxy with Goodbye Tomorrow, National Product, The Appearence, and 2nd Day Crush. The band is still unsigned as of yet. I am excited to see where this tour and EP take them.

Photos! Birdmonster - Club Spaceland May 12th, 2006

FEATURED ARTIST: BIRDMONSTER

The Birdboys landed at Club Spaceland last night. What a glorious family reunion it was. I hadn't seen the guys since SXSW and was suffering from withdrawls.

I met up with Dave, Petey, Zach, and Justin over at Leela's (AWESOME Thai place right next to the venue for non LA-ers). We caught up with each other and than went over to the venue.

It was a very weird lineup paired with very weird sound last night. First up were the Bangkok 5 - who made glam punk look even worse than preconception. My friend Kelcey showed up just before the Takedown hit the stage and we retreated to the smoking room to get away from it.

Birdmonster hit the stage a little after 10:30 PM. They started things off with the fantastic build of "Ice Age." They immediately raced into "Cause You Can" and kept the energy brewing for the entire set.

The sound at Spaceland was unsually bad for the night. All you could hear was the high end of Peter's guitar, crunchy drums, and distant bass. I don't think the band could hear themselves on stage. Still I danced my little legs off in the front of the stage and eventually stole a tamborine and rocked out from "Alabama" to "Spaceman."

If you missed Birdmonster last night you will have a second chance as they play the AlterKnit Lounge TONIGHT at the Knitting Factory.

[MP3] Birdmonster - Balcony

Birdmonster have flown into the southland for the next two days. WHOOOPEE!!!! The band will play with Ashbury TONIGHT at Club Spaceland and TOMORROW at the AlterKnit Lounge.

I think I've used every adjective under the sun to describe how much I love this band and how super stoked I am to see them live again. I really don't need to go into much more detail. THEY FUCKING ROCK. That's my drunken sorority girl quote for the year.

Read all about their adventures on the road on their tour blog. The band - steered by the smokey Patrick Stewart, will be heading back to Frisco after this weekend. You really won't want to miss this shows. Missing either of them will result in a fierce Jax-Slapping to any offending parties.

[MP3] Division Day - Tap-Tap, Click-Click

I drove down to Costa Mesa last night to see my boys in Division Day. They were playing a show at the Detroit Bar - which seems so outta place for its location (Imagine the Sky Bar placed smack in the middle of McArthur Park).

Still the long drive was well worth it when the band hit the stage and knocked everyone's socks off.

Division Day are heading north - playing San Francisco TONIGHT with John Vanderslice and Laura Veirs.

Car Accident #3 For 2006

I am truly TRULY jinxed. I must have been part of some ploy to murder the dalai llama in a former life because I sure am paying for it now.

I GOT IN ANOTHER FUCKING CAR ACCIDENT.

There's now a verb for my chronic shit luck disorder - Being "JAXED."

Yesterday while drive home an 18 wheeler in front of me blew the tread on one of its tires. I didn’t have time to get out of the way. The tread went up into the wheel well of my car and caused me to lose control. I nearly missed the semi truck before swerving into the other lane, doing a total 180 and ending up facing the wrong direction on the northbound 405 freeway. Miraculously NO ONE HIT ME. The tread completely tore off the lining to my wheel well, jacked my suspension, and the skirted all the way down the undercarriage of my car inflicting even more doom. Sigh I really shouldn’t own a car.

To make matters worse, I took my car into the auto body shop this morning. I parked my borrowed car on the street and didn’t notice it was street cleaning. Within 3 minutes I had a fucking parking ticket.

IT NEVER ENDS. IT REALLY NEVER ENDS.

Division Day - "Hurricane" Video

FEATURED ARTIST: DIVISION DAY

[MP3] Division Day - Hurricane
[MP3] Division Day - Tigers

My workload in the last two days has quadrupled. I made a huuge post yesterday laced with great music, concert dates, and Britney Spears "Oops I Did It Again" references, but when I went to post it DISAPPEARED. I hate blogger right now. I had no time to rewrite, hence no awesome post.

I have been sitting at my desk slowly contemplating ways I can drill out all the pressure behind my eyes from staring at a computer screen too long. Right when I thought I couldn't take it anylonger I opened up my bloglines and found that Dany had posted up Division Day's new video for "Hurricane."

First off it's my FAVOURITE track off their new EP, Beartrap Island, and second I have been hearing abt how amazing this video was going to be for months. NOW IT'S FINISHED and just totally saved my temple from a quick drill bit to the head. Gracias Amigos.

I cant spend long a post today but I wanted to get one out. In all the melee of the week I missed my 1 yr blogger anniverary - WHICH WAS YESTERDAY

FEATURED ARTIST: DESTROYER

[MP3] Destoyer - Painter In Your Pocket
[MP3] Destoyer - Rubies

Dan Bejar - AKA the amazingly talented totally sonic musician who goes by the moniker Destroyer is back in Los Angeles. You may know him best for his work with his OTHER band The New Pornographers. The BlogWorld has gone totally APE SHIT over the release of his 7th album, Destoyer's Rubies. I have to admit I am one of those rabid bloggers that can't get enough. personally I think anyone who starts an album with a 9 1/2 minute song is pretty much a bad ass.

Destoyer will be performing live TONIGHT at Club Spaceland. Tickets are sold out online but a small number of tickets will be made available at the door. I would get there early if you're thinking of going.

The Vines "Anysound" Video Premiere At YouTube.com

[VIDEO] The Vines - Anysound

The Vines unveiled their 3rd video off VISION VALLEY for the track "Anysound" today in an exclusive premiere featured on the main page over at YouTube.com - or as I like to call it "The website more addictive than chap stick."

"Anysound" is the first track off their new album - which many are hailing as a solid comeback. Craig was diagnosed with Asberger's Syndrome - a form of austism in late 2004. Many thought The Vines "Winning Days" were kaputz. Instead of giving up they pulled it together and knocked out one of the most raw records of the year.

The video was directed by Olivier Gondry and features some really kick ass claymation. I couldnt help but notice the claymation set looks exactly like set from the video for "Ride."

Head over to YouTube.com to catch the exclusive premiere now.

[MP3] The Flesh - "Compulsion"

One of the best things I brought back with me from New York City (besides Boba Pet my new Tiger) were memories of seeing The Flesh in the basement at The Midway (formerly Scenic). What an utterly fantastic band.

I walked into Rated X a smidge past midnight. I heard an infectious beat coming from the basement and mosied on down to see what was up. I was so enamored with their performance I stayed for the entire set. Vocalist Gabriella Zappia's voice is deliciously dynamic and cutting. It drew me right in...

The Flesh At Rated X

The Flesh had just returned home from touring in Europe and the crowd was insanely greatful to have them back. The band was even called back to the stage for an encore and nailed it.

You can download their new demo "Compulsion" above.

I had soo much fun in New York City and now I am super effin' tired. Too much fun haha. You can check out photos from my trip right here.

Hello NEW YORKERS

I have infiltrated Manhattan for the weekend. No need to run for the
hills (or worse QUEENS) I shall be leaving on monday.

Went to the Bronx Zoo today and it was awesome. I saw tigers and bears

Tonight I will be hitting up the Bowery Ballroom for The Fever's Record
release party then strolling over to scenic for Rated X (I'm scared).

Email me at jax@rockinsider.com if anything fun is going on or you want

Photos! Morningwood At The Roxy CAUTION NUDITY!

FEATURED ARTIST: MORNINGWOOD
official site

View Flickr Photo Set

Morningwood threw down one of their top 5 shows EVER last night at The Roxy. When I mean ever I mean EVER! I've seen at least 50 MW shows in the last few years. It was their first ever headlining gig in LA and they SOLD THE FUCK outta that venue.

The band whipped the crowd into a frenzy with their instrumental opener "Good Morningwood." They immediately plowed into "Nu Rock" and "Televisor" and the packed house sang along to every word.

Morningwood played "Everybody Rules" for the first time in 4 months and FINALLY (FINALLY!!!) rocked "Babysitter" live. Babysitter is a hidden jem on their debut album (track 8 people). The rock circus continued with Chantal stealing cameras from the audience, starting a grind pit in the audience, 2 sisters going completely topless for "Take Off Your Clothes" and one crazy fan jumping up on stage during "Jetsetter."

By the time the band had left the stage the audience was going bizzerk. Morningwood came back and played "NY Girls" and for the first time ever LIVE "Knock On Wood." 3 lovely ladies from the Suicide Girls hopped on stage in Morningwood panties and "It's Tits" tank tops to throw confetti at the crowd and continue the melee for another 3 minutes and 14 seconds.

Finally the curtain came down, the show was over....and still abt 200 fans sat and screamed at the curtain for more. alas, no second encore. COME'ON GUYS that shit is exhausting!!

CHANTAL ON THE PHONE WITH LEMMY

After the show Chantal met Phil from Motorhead who was in the audience and loved every second of the show. He whipped out his cell phone and dialed up Lemmy - who is one of Chantal's biggest idols. Chantal talked to him on the phone for a minute and then he invited her over to the Rainbow Room for a drink. We packed out and strolled over. Sure enough at the end of the bar was Lemmy parked in front of video poker looking like his total bad ass self. Chantal was awstruck. Lemmy bought her a vodka cranberry. The perfect end to a perfect night.

Morningwood - "Nth Degree" (Video)

Oh yes it's Ladies Night....and the feeeeelings right. Three fantastic bands featuring female fronted powerhouses will be plowing through Hollywood tonight: Morningwood, Rainer Maria, and Ambulette.

Morningwood are finally back in LA from their tour with The Sounds. They are doing an In-Store TODAY at the Virgin Megastore Hollywood (You know the new one at H&H) at 6:45 PM then heading over to The Roxy for their first ever headlining gig in Los Angeles. Soo proud of them.

RAINER MARIA

[MP3] Ranier Maria - Burn

The amazing music of Rainer Maria will be blasting down Santa Monica Blvd tonight as the band returns to LA to play the Troubadour TONIGHT. The new album - Catastrophe Keeps Us Together just hit stores on April 4th. I don't know why but singer Caithlin De Marrais' voice has a way of cutting down any bad mood I'm in. This record makes me nostalgic and is wonderfully bittersweet. A great find for the Spring.

AMBULETTE

[MP3] Ambulette - "Seconds Until Midnight"

If you're going to the Rainer Maria show tonight be sure to get there early and see Ambulette. The band recently released their 5 song Lottery EP on Astralwerks.

WHY YOU WILL LOVE THIS BAND: features the A-MAZING voice of Maura Davis of Denali fame. I think I spent the entire year I was in college OBSESSING over Denali. Ambulette is equally if not more amazing. The band will be on tour with Rainer Maria for the next two weeks before taking a break to record their debut full length.

[MP3] The Octopus Project - The Adjustor
[MP3] The Octopus Project - Music Is Happiness

Deep from the heart of Texas (Austin to be exact) The Octopus Project have decided to brave the "May Day March" and Immigration Protests going on all over the city and head into Los Angeles to play a FREE SHOW tonight at The Little Radio Warehouse.

The band played Coachella over the weekend. Sure it was exciting and filled with noise pop goodness. I was probably still trying to jimmy open my fucking glove box while they were playing. I am very excited to see them for the first time live tonight.

I have been trying to think of the best way to describe The Octopus Project all morning. For some reason a Rubik's Cube keeps popping to mind. Completely colorful experimental electronic pop. I'm a sucker for sweeping instrumentals. Their music is insane and I'm in love with it. Download two tracks above from their new album 'ONE TEN HUNDRED THOUSAND MILLION' out now on Peek A Boo Records. You can purchase it right here.

WATCH the video for "Music Is Happiness"

Over 500,000 protestors are expected to march through the streets of Downtown LA today for the Great American Boycott. You can watch live streaming video of it right here. Businesses all over the city are closed today or closing early because of staff shortages, demonstrations, clogged city streets, and people using the MAY DAY holiday as an excuse to play hookie. Seriously for shame.

You can read all about the Great American Boycott/Day Without Immigrants events going on:

They're shutting down my office early. I have a feeling getting home to Koreatown is going to be next to impossible.
