The Hollywood Hills Are Burning

My office building faces the Hollywood Hills just off the 101 on Vine St. An hour ago I looked out the window to see a giant plume of smoke billowing just north of the Hollywood sign! There apparently is a huge brushfire burning off Barham Blvd near the Oakwood Apartment complex - known best as the party pad bands stay in while recording their major label debuts.

There have been two power surges in my building in the last 30 minutes. Everytime we have a power surge the fire doors SLAM SHUT over the elevators. It's frickin CRAZY!

Watch video of the fire and read more at NBC4.tv

The Minor Canon Every Monday In April At Spaceland

[MP3] The Minor Canon - It Never Was

It is NO SECRET that over here at Camp Rock Insider we absolutely adore Paul Larson and all the men of The Minor Canon. The seven piece rock/pop outfit positively ooze Memphis soul. Listening to their heartfelt songs loaded with gorgeous swell and emotional horns makes me feel right at home in even the most stressful environment.

The throngs of Los Angeles will finally get to see the band in all their glory this April as the band begins their 5 week residency every Monday night at Club Spaceland. Admission is 21 Yrs + and as always totally FREE!

In addition to playing songs off their recent full length debut - No Good Deed Goes Unpunished, the band will be playing a new cover song every week as well as performing unreleased material. I already witnessed a tremendous Pavement cover at the band's CD Release show a few weeks back.

These shows will be the band's last in the LA area for the next several months as
they get ready for the summer tour season. So make sure to catch them
while you can!

An Open Love Letter To Sea Wolf

SEA WOLF

[MP3] Sea Wolf - You're A Wolf
[MP3] Sea Wolf - Black Dirt

Dearest Sea Wolf,

Ahem, well first off may I call you Alex? You don't know me but I'm a young MP3 blogger in her early twenties living in Echo Park. Most people call me JAX, but you can call me Ashley if you want. I don't want you to think this is creepy or anything (OK i'll admit it's probably slightly creepy given the fact I'M BLOGGING this) but I wanted you to know that I think you're incredible (blushes).

Irving has been a favorite of mine for years. I first saw you as Sea Wolf at your Spaceland Residency last year and was impressed. Then you go and kick it up a notch at The Hot Freaks in Austin.

Your performance in Texas was simply magical. I was standing next to Rachel from Scenestars (see photos here) at the show and both of us totally fell in love with you and your band's performance. You've really transformed into an act unto yourself. I commend you for it. "You're A Wolf" have been in regular rotation at my desk ever since. Well written dreamy folk songs like yours seem to be winning the war over LCD Soundsystem's Sound Of Silver in iTUNES this morning. Your tunes are so laid back, effortless, catchy, and are completely aiding my daily distractions. THANK YOU!

It's so cool to see bloggers everywhere discovering your awesomeness. I can't wait for your upcoming Dangerbird full length and it makes me smile to see you playing a few dates with Silversun Pickups.

I look forward to you seeing you completely blow up. If you ever have it in your heart to meet a blogger for coffee to discuss the finer points of Echo Park life - don't hesitate to email me: jax@rockinsider.com.

Yours Truly,

Ashley

PS. Did your bassist ever work at the Brite Spot? I totally couldn't take my eyes off the tattoo on his elbow in Austin. It looked so familiar, but I couldn't put my finger on it...

How To Relaunch a Former Hot Spot

Wild Dogs @ Guatelinda
Friday, March 30th (9pm to 3am)
$2 Cover w/ RSVP or Flyer (rsvp@wilddogs.us)

Guatelinda used to be a hot spot in late 80's early 90's for Skate Master Tate's (SK8 TV Nickelodeon) dance club. I pass by it on Hollywood Blvd every single day on my way home from work and always wondered what the heck it was. Apparently as of late it has been host to many a Reggaton & Latino Rock night. You would be hard-pressed to find a single American Apparel clad waif within 30 yards of their front door. I do have to hand it to the hipsters man. They're always the first to embrace the melting pot that is LA and reinvent it into something even potentially even. Such is the case with a new club night at Guatelinda - WILD DOGS.

Wild Dogs objective is to have FUN and DANCE and celebrate the weirdos and awesomeness that is LA. DJs will keep the party going until well after the usual 2 am call time. Admission is only $2 with RSVP. Looking at all the players involved with this night I say it's definitely worth checking out tomorrow night.

DJ's:
DJ Pubes (La Cita Thursdays)
Them Jeans (Cinespace Tuesdays)
Filip Nikolic of (Guns N' Bombs, Ima Robot)
DJ Napkin (Ooga Booga Shop)

Indie Chicks Who Freakin' Rock: The Happy Hollows

The Happy Hollows

[MP3] The Happy Hollows - Vietnam

I have found so many tremendous female fronted bands in the past few weeks that I've decided to start a new feature on Rock Insider called "Chicks Who Freakin' Rock." First up in the series: Sarah Negahdari of The Los Angeles' based rock trio The Happy Hollows.

I first stumbled across The Happy Hollows back in January when I ventured out to the Silverlake Lounge for The Pity Party's Monday night residency. Sarah's energy on stage was e-x-p-l-o-s-i-v-e. Her dynamic voice and trademark knee socks came packaged with a writhing sense of rock abandon made the 3 piece feel more like a 12 piece. Sarah used Silverlake Lounge's tiny stage to its fullest in a schizophrenic performance that left the audience awe-struck.

I got to hand it to The Hollows - even in the smallest venues with minimal crowds they always crank their performance to eleven. LA-Underground recounted one such performance a few weeks back. The Happy Hollows embody everything I love about live music and everything I look for in my nightly wanderings through Los Angeles. They have so much fun on stage and make sure the audience is having just as much fun.

The band recently put out their own EP entitled Bunnies and Bombs - which is the perfect companion to their sweet yet destructive live show. You can purchase the EP on the band's myspace page.

Their video for "Vietnam" was also recently chosen as an editor's pick on YouTube. You can watch the video right here. The video perfectly showcases this band's energy and is a MUST WATCH.

The Happy Hollows will be playing Radio Free Silverlake's first birf-day party TONIGHT at Boardner's in Hollywood with Rock Insider favs The Deadly Syndrome and The Lights From Here. Flyer Below:

The Henry Clay People - Blacklist The Kid With The Red Moustache

The Henry Clay People

[MP3] The Henry Clay People - The Untitled Communist Song
[MP3] The Henry Clay People - Elly Vs The Eczema Princess

The Henry Clay People have been at the top of my long list of local L.A. bands I-still-need-to-see-but-can't-manage-to-catch for way too long. Since September the Glendale by way of Orange County power pop quartet have played just about every east side venue and are really starting to build a small and fierce following.

The Henry Clay People started as a project between two brothers and two school friends who bonded over a love of The Replacements and Pavement. Both influences show heavily in their songs. When it comes to describing their sound the band replies "we simply do the best with what we got." If you ask me there is still something incredibly original and unique about their quirky guitar driven tracks.

After hearing the band's first self released album, Birdman & The Squid, Howard Bilerman (Arcade Fire, Godspeed You!) and Colin Stewart (Frog Eyes, Destroyer) agreed to produce the band's second full length, Blacklist The Kid With The Red Moustache - which is available NOW. The record was later mixed by Harris Newman (Wolf Parade, Sunset Rubdown, Swan Lake) and in true DIY fashion every aspect of the album was fully funded by the band themselves.

Blacklist The Kid With The Red Moustache is a fun and engaging record loaded with soaring guitar riffs, tons of moxy, and a personality that pulls the listener in.

Fans can purchase the new album from the band's myspace page. If you live in LA you can purchase the record at the band's shows or at Amoeba Records. Be sure to catch The Henry Clay People at their CD Release Show April 4th at The Scene in Glendale.

Friday Guilty Pleasures: MUTE MATH

VIDEO: Mute Math - Typical

Mute Math. Cute Boys, Epic Rock Sound, Keytars, Light Show, Destruction and Mayhem.

Their new video for "Typical" is insane. Just like the OK Go treadmill video it was done in one continuous shot.

Wow moment of the week for me. Check it out above.

Mute Math will be playing the House of Blues Sunset April 25th.

This Is Not A Joke: BECK PLAYED HELL YA! LAST NIGHT

BECK AT HELL YA! March 22nd, 2007

I really have to hand it to Heather. Yesterday I got a call from her just after my lunch break. She was giddy with excitement yet still managed to squeak out "Guess who's playing HELL YA! tonight?" I was tired and didn't feel like playing games so I said "I Give Up."

BECK.

I didn't believe her for a second. I packed my DJ gear and went down to the Echo thinking he would never show up - yet sure enough:

Beck

Played HELL YA! Last Night

I shot video as well but for some reason my computer wont let me open the files in quicktime. As Soon as it's fixed you shall have it.

We Are North American Scum

VIDEO: LCD Soundsystem - North American Scum

It's been so crazy around here the last few days that I totally forgot to mention LCD Soundsystem's new album Sound Of Silver hit stores yesterday.

Pitchfork gave the record an unprecedented 9.2 rating - calling it James' Murphy's finest work to date. I think it may be the first Pitchfork review I whole heartedly agree with.

LCD will be playing two SOLD OUT gigs at the Bowery Ballroom in New York City at the end of this month and will be kicking off a U.S. tour after Coachella. Find more information on James and The Gang's upcoming tour plans right here.

SXSW Break Out: White Denim

White Denim @ The Hot Freaks - I Totally Stole This Photo From GorillaVsBear

[MP3] White Denim - shakeshakeshake

In my last few hours at SXSW I stumbled across White Denim. I heard "shakeshakeshake" on the net months ago, but never really paid much attention to it. It's a rough recording and the vocals are a little weird. Still, Chris at GvB was ADAMANT I give them a shot. He has been singing their praises for months. It wasn't until I experienced their exuberant live show first hand that I fully understood Chris' enthusiasm.

White Denim hit the indoor stage at The Mohawk just after 1:30 PM for The Hot Freaks. The room was packed with an assortment of press, bloggers, industry professionals, local hipsters, and JOCKS. The 3 piece freaking SLAYED it with a style I have never seen before. I'm finding myself having a hard time putting in words exactly how freaking great they were. White Denim were part classic rock, part jangly indie pop, part noise, part sing along, part incoherent babbling, and totally insane.

The band had unbelievable banter which continued into well into their songs making their performance feel like one long conversation/jam session in which the audience was totally involved. Their set was unique, compelling, and for lack of a better word: AWESOME.

You can listen to more tracks on the band's myspace page.

Back From SXSW - Minus Cell Phone

The Black Angels

[MP3] The Black Angels - Bloodhounds On My Trail

Dear Readers,

I am so so so sos osososoooooooo so sorry I haven't updated the site in more than a week. All the revelry and chaos of SXSW made updating quite problematic. I had a lot of fun - expect a full review in the next few days.

I'll be starting a new position in the next few weeks that is going to demand a lot more of my time. I'd love to say that I will be able to keep blogging everyday but alas, it's not going to be possible. Don't worry, Rock Insider is not going ANYWHERE! I've decided to hire a new writer on the site. He will be starting in the next day or so.

I will leave you with 1 thing today: The Black Angels had the best live show at SXSW this year HANDS DOWN. If you ask me this band should be opening for Nine Inch Nails or Smashing Pumpkins this summer.

Monsoon Boredom + Fun with Camera phone

Ryan from Division Day is so punk rock he sleeps with his guitar in the
back of the van.

D Day + Moi are en route to San Antonio. It is absolutely pouring and
the lightning scary. We are just outside Austin in standstill traffic
and should get there right at load in.

Slightly bored so I decided to mess around with my crappy cameraphone.

I just got a call from Benji in To Live And Die In LA. They absolutely
killed it at our show with the cassettes last friday and will also be
playing San Antonio tonight at the revolution room. Set time is 10 pm.
Were going to try and meet up for some revelry before a week of mischief
at sxsw.

Safe Travels Everyone!

SXSW Here We Come

Half the city of Los Angeles will decend on Austin, TX over the next few days. Soon every bar along 6th street will be packed with crackberrys and blue tooth devices - choking out the usual drunken college students in the name of indie rock glory.

SXSW is always madness, chaos, stressful, and oh so much fun! Bring on another year!

Division Day

I'm in Dallas right now - hitching a ride into the festival with the gentlemen of Division Day and Birdmonster. They're headed to San Antonio tonight for another show at the Limelight sponsored by those loveable fellers at Music For Listeners. Exactly a year ago today Birdmonster played the same show with Tapes N' Tapes. Check out photos from that show right here.

Birdmonster were just added to The Hot Freaks party on Saturday. I just witnessed a set consisting of only 3 old songs in Dallas last night and holy moly are their new songs good. Get the lowdown on The Hot Freaks' now not so secret headliner Saturday night over at GvB.

More later tonight.

Land Of Talk - Applause Cheer Boo Hiss

Land Of Talk

[MP3] Land Of Talk - Speak To Me Bones

I've seen Land Of Talk's name everywhere but never got around to listening to them. It's a serious problem I have.

My friend asked me yesterday if I'd heard them. I sheepishly replied "NO." She freaked out and immediately reached for her earbuds for an impromptu iPOD concert. Within the first 3 measures of "Speak To Me Bones" I could tell I was going to be obsessed with this band. It's the best parts of Pretty Girls Makes Graves mixed with blissful drone reminiscent of Elliott. I was obsessed with both bands in my college radio days.

Land Of Talk will be releasing a 7 song mini album entitled Applause Cheer Boo Hiss on March 20th via The Rebel Group. Order the record online right here.

The band will be playing The Hot Freaks event at SXSW on Saturday March 17th at 1:30 PM on the Club DeVille Stage.
