O'Death - Broken Hymns, Limbs and Skin

O' Death (New York, NY)

There is a long list of band's I've featured on Rock Insider that I fell out of touch with until recently. New York based country punk project known as O'Death is definitely one of them. The band have been making a lot more noise lately in the blogosphere becoming the joy of music writers and musicians alike. Meric Long of The Dodos is an avid fan.
The band released their 3rd full length LP Broken Hymns, Limbs and Skin this week on Kemado. They also unveiled their new video for "Lowtide" on Pitchfork TV.

O'Death will be heading out on tour this fall. Dates are below. Be sure to catch the band Nov. 22nd at Spaceland!

Watch the new video right here. Pick up the album on EMusic.

What Are Your Halloween Plans?

The Ronald Regan People (Los Angeles, CA) Photo by la-underground
Well now that the Little Radio Creep Show is no longer it looks like my Halloween plans are a bit up in the air. The Ronald Regan People aka The Henry Clay People have decided to move the show to the Cat and Fiddle in Hollywood Tonight. This is more than likely where I will wind up because I'm going to see a screening of the new Justice "A Cross The Universe" DVD at 7pm TONIGHT at the Montalban Theater up the street and I can take the metro there. Party is on tonight!

Best of CMJ 2008 - Passion Pit

Passion Pit (Cambridge, MA)

Yesterday I posted about Ponytail being one of my two mind blowing acts fully realized at CMJ this year (read post). Today we unveil the second and final contender - the Boston based beat masters known as Passion Pit.

[MP3] Passion Pit - I've Got Your Number

This band played pretty much every major day party and major showcase - including the hot as hell, can barely move let alone breathe NME Showcase at The Annex. The majority of the crowd was there to see them. I got so overheated and claustrophobic that I had to leave after only 2 songs. I caught them later at the Planetary Skewer Party at Piano's. One word - FAB.

Passion Pit's new EP Chunk Of Change - out now on French Kiss Records has been in regular rotation in my IPOD for several months now. I have featured their tracks in mix tapes and have alluded to greatness but was waiting for the perfect moment to pop their "Rock Insider Full Blown Post" cherry.

Ladies and germs - Passion Pit have finally made their way to Los Angeles and will be playing TOMORROW night at The Henry Fonda Theater with Yelle. The band goes on at ten on the dot.

Passion Pit music has delicious swells and fantastic melodies. This is achieved by no less than 10 synthesizers, bass, and drums. They sound exactly like their record live. It's kind of remarkable.

Pick up Chunk of Change on ITUNES now.

Seriously Apple Why Do You Keep Doing This To Me?!?!?

Apple just unveiled the new 13" and 15" Mackbooks today. They're 5x faster with a sleeker design and more graphics power than ever before. It basically makes my 2 year old apple obsolete and also makes it impossible to get repairs made.

Honestly Steve Jobs....I hate you sometimes. Please, still send me that free IPOD.

[MP3] Soulwax - Compute

FOLKS AT APPLE - I have a brilliant Idea. How bout you start leasing out Macbooks so when you come out with new and improved technology every 6 months those with a leasing plans get an automatic upgrade - just like car companies do.

Just an idea....

Best Of CMJ 2008 - Ponytail

Ponytail (Baltimore, MD)

So many people have asked me this week what bands I thought were the best at CMJ. In all honesty there were only two bands I'd never seen before that positively blew me away. The first of which I will reveal today...Baltimore, MD based noise outfit Ponytail.

I thought I would show you rather than tell. Check out video of Ponytail performing live at The Fader Fort during the CMJ.

Their debut album Ice Cream Spiritual is filled with youthful hope, spastic guitars, and some of most intriguing vocals I've ever heard. They ooze high spirited energy and joy. This band is more than just enjoyable to watch. You feel like you're witnessing something special.

Download "G Shock" from Ice Cream Spiritual below!

Tonight's The Night! Monolators CD Release Show

I took a red eye from New York City last night to get back to LA. Went straight from Webster Hall to th airport and after 5 hours of turbulence I'm ready to rock!!

TONIGHT is the long long long LONG long LOOOOOOONG awaited CD Release Show for The Monolator's new full length album - Don't Dance!!!! You have no idea how excited I am for people to finally hear it!

The album features yours truly on bass as welll as some tasty tidbits here and there throughout the 10 tracks.  Miss Wendy Wang of The Sweet Hurt and I even dabbled in  the production of the last song the "Don't Dance (Reprise)" which is a nod to classic 70s Disco and Funk. We used everything from handclaps, to wind chimes to bongos and a helluva lotta GONG.

Don't Dance is now available on iTUNES . You can purchase 12" vinyl of the release at tonight's show!

Sorry Its Been So Long...

Hey Kids,

I'm sorry it's been so long. Job hunt has proven to take up a lot of my time and I must admit I've been going through some duldrums lately. I'm feeling much better to be out and active again.I'm in New York City at the CMJ Music Marathon seeing a lot of bands, running around with a runny nose, and running into people I haven't seen in years. It has been so much fun but at the same time so very hectic.

Excuses aside the blog must go on. Here's my top 10 from moments from CMJ thus far...

1. Walking Across the Williamsburg Bridge with my friend Dave. It's become a ritual every time we're in New York at the same time.
2. Watching The Coathangers and Crystal Antlers under the Williamsburg Bridge at dusk. It was only 38 degrees outside and MAN was it cold.
3. Breakfast with my friend Jed at Veselka in the East Village. They seriously have the best toast in all of NYC.
4. Suffering through hype bands that we're severely overrated and talking smack while they play - then realizing I was talking smack to the band's publicist. Ouch.
5. Hanging out with Paul Tao at the Fader Fort and almost knocking a 20 foot tall cardboard robot to the floor.
6. Melissa Auf Der Maur Art opening in the East Village. I worked Melissa Auf Der Maur's solo record forever and a day ago. It was so great to see her again.
7. Passion Pit sound like their record live. You have no idea how relieved I was. They really are THAT GOOD.
8. Establishing the definition between a L Train Hpster and a JMZ Hipster. You have to live in Brooklyn to know the definition. It's pretty much the same as a Silverlake Hipster and an Echo Park Hipster.
9. Sleeping through bad dub and reggae ton in Jed and Lisa's living room. It's now so loud that it shakes objects off counter tops. I still got 6 solid hours. Wow.
10. Wearing a coat for the first time this year!!!

LA IN NYC TONIGHT: The Pity Party will play their official showcase at Piano's at Midnight.

I have limited access to e-mail and limited access to internet connections so if you need to get a hold of me please call. Also I will be live blogging from CMJ through My Twitter feed. Follow my feed at to get all the latest updates of what I'm up to in NYC!!!!

Miss you guys and be back in LA on Saturday for some really big massive party that you will be kicking yourself if you miss.

At Which Point JAX Heads Out To NYC

So it's official. I will be heading out to the CMJ Music Marathon Next week to catch some great new music, hang out with right coast friends I haven't seen in a while, and get a real slice of frickin' pIzza for a change (one preferably without a whole wheat crust, tofu sausage, and organic goat cheese).

Email me if you're going to be in NYC! Lets meet up!

Noah And The Whale Announce December Tour

Noah And The Whale (London, UK)

I missed Noah and The Whale's set at Detour Fest because they played at the same time as The Monolators. Most people know them as that one band from that one car commercial, but their happy go lucky feel good tunes really encompass more than just hocking hubcaps. Everyone I talked to at the fest who had seen them had nothing but raving words to say. I was more than a bit disappointed.

So boy was I stoked this morning when I received an e-mail this morning announcing that they will back stateside in December.

the band will be performing at The Troubadour on December 18th. Tickets are available for purchase for $15 right here. Get 'em early though - I really have a feeling this thing is going to sell out.

VIDEO The Dears - Money Babies

The Dears (Montreal, Quebec Canada)

If there is one song that could be pegged as the theme song for our current economic situation it would be "Money  Babies" by  The Dears . The fuzz laden track swells and falls like the recent dow jones and is propelled by the chorus which repeats "Our Money Is Elastic" numerous times. The band just released a video for the single which premiered yesterday on MTV2's Subterranean Blog. Check out the video below.

The Dears will be performing two show in NYC during CMJ before hitting the road with The Secret Machines. Dates can be found below. Missiles is in stores Next Monday October 21st on Dangerbird Records.

Speaking of CMJ -  I'm seriously considering going. A little last minute but I'm suddenly inspired to see New York in the fall while I still have the free time. Recommended Shows October 14th, 2008

Halloween is just around the corner

Well I learned two very important things last night. 1) Always be the first to break out the scarf and 2.) Aaron of Earlimart and Tim from The Movies make one hell of a dynamic duo. OK, maybe those aren't really that important....

THE POINT is that The Echo was so much fun last night. Crowds were light - a sign of the times I think, But all 4 bands were fantastic. Eagle and Talon performed songs off their upcoming full length which after catching the live version I'm intrigued to hear what the full length has in store. The Transmissions once again played the cleanup slot at 11:45 but performed an amazing set. Wrong Way Driver featuring Brian of Earlimart also surprised me.

Tonight it's all about reunions and big touring acts. I'm going to be spending the night in.

Recommended Shows TONIGHT:

Wire , The Muslims @ The Echo - I'd actually never heard of Wire before and when I mentioned that in front of Travis from Web In Front he almost caned me :)

Santogold , The Ting Tings, Mates of State @ The Wiltern

Antony & the Johnsons @ Walt Disney Hall

PS. Happy belated birthday Kevin Bronson!

The Valley Is Burning! Plus Monday Mixtape Postponed

West Hills View of The fires in Lakeview Terrace and Porter Ranch. Photo by JAX

If you're in the valley at all today AVOID the 118 Fwy. There are two fires burning out of control in the area and the freeway is shut down in both directions from Simi Valley to Reseda Blvd. Police are now evacuating Porter Ranch. I was in West Hills this morning for an appointment and snapped this pick of the fires. Air quality is really bad and forced the cancellation of classes at Cal State Northridge for the rest of today. BE CAREFUL OUT THERE!!

Today's Monday Mixtape feature is being postponed until I can get all my files transfered over from my work computer to my home laptop. All my new music files were on my work computer so all I have here are the classics that would get me in hot water with the RIAA.

In the meantime enjoy Mouse's Review of Rademacher's ERA EP out now on our very own JAXART label.

From Classical Geek Theatre:
You'll never want to listen to Rademacher's ERA EP in the company of others. It demands loneliness, space to think, and perhaps cool night air coming from the rolled-down car window. Read more...

The band will be playing at the Echo TONIGHT with Wrong Way Driver, The Transmissions, and Eagle and Talon.

A Simple Message - PLEASE VOTE

Man is it an interesting time for everyone - a lot of unwanted change, rocky beginnings, and financial woes that seem to be slowly draining the hope out of our nation.

I'd like to start off by saying I do not consider myself a political person WHATSOEVER. I try to focus on music and spreading the joy it brings. But right now our country is in a state of TREMENDOUS turmoil and change. I myself have felt the affects. In the middle of paying off ridiculous medical bills even though I had insurance I was laid off from my job and watched my life savings dwindle more than 40% in just 2 weeks. I'm 24 and will bounce back but try telling that to my parents and grandparents who are experienecing the exact same crisis alongside MILLIONS of other Americans.

We are all victims of he mismanagement of this country and in the less than a month the decision will be ours to vote for positive change or to continue to do nothing to stop the painful economic and social decline that is now invading every facet of our lives.

My message is simple. PLEASE VOTE. There are many great organizations like Rock The Vote that can assist you in your registration.

If long lines at the polls are dissuading you from voting you have another option. If you live in the state of California you cast your vote early. Find more information about it here.

Cold War Kids - Bullies Always Win

Cold War Kids (Long Beach, CA)

What a happy Wednesday morning! I woke up early to move my car and have been having a pleasant morning sipping coffee, putting away all the affects from my old office and listening to Glenn Campbell. It really doesn't get any better than this.

I am going to be out and about the majority of the day so I though I would drop you a quick MP3. Over at RCRD LBL they have an exclusive download for Cold War Kids track - Bullies Always Win. Somehow I related the title of this track to my current situation and felt the need to share.

The song was previously only available with album pre-order and is on a UK 7" but hasnt been available in the US until now.

Loyalty To Loyalty is available now. The record is fantastic. I highly suggest picking it up.

Photos: The Henry Clay People CD Release Show @ Spaceland (10/3/08)

Joey Siara Of The Henry Clay People (Los Angeles, CA)

Well if you missed The Henry Clay People's near capacity CD release show at Spaceland last Friday you certainly missed a piece of Los Angeles history. Good thing Rock Insider photographer Benjamin Hoste was there to catch all the action.

The Clays played all new material off their new album For Cheap or For Free (read my review here) and threw one stinkin' hell of a party. I wont get into the specifics. For that check out Mouse over at Classical Geek Theater's review of the show.

Detour and Eagle Rock Music Festivals Take Over Los Angeles TOMORROW!

The Monolators (Los Angeles, CA) will perform at LA Weekly's Detour Festival in Downtown LA tomorrow at 12:45pm

TOMORROW is going to be absolutely insane. LA Weekly's Detour Music Festival will be taking over downtown Los Angeles with performances from Gogol Bordello, The Mars Volta, Data Rock, Cut Copy and more. Meanwhile on the other side of the hill The Eagle Rock Music Festival will showcase over 60 of the best up and coming underground bands from across LA with performances from Crystal Antlers, Abe Vigoda, Light FM, Pizza!, Earlimart, The Flying Tourbillon Ochestra and Divisadero to name a few.

I'm going to be pulling double duty by doing BOTH festivals. As you may may remember The Monolators won the Detour Festival Battle of the Bands Competition and will be opening up the main stage at 12:45pm SHARP. After we perform we will be high tailing it over to the Eagle Rock Music Festival to perform with The Cobra Lilies - which features 3/4 Monolators as well as members of Divisadero, Amateurs, Smells Like Flan, and Ema and The Ghosts.

So which festival is better? I think it's a case of different strokes for different folks. The biggest difference between the two festivals: tickets to Detour are over $40 dollars while admission to the Eagle Rock Music Festival is completely and totally FREE OF CHARGE.

Photos: The Voyeurs @ Spaceland (10/1/08)

For the few of you who didn't go see MBV last night - The Voyeurs played at Spaceland with The Minor Canon for Club NME. I unfortunately couldn't attend due to band rehearsal and trip down to Long Beach but Rock Insider photog Benjamin Hoste was there to capture all the action. Check out photos below!

Long Beach readers catch them live at Que Sera October 8th with The Flying Tourbillon Orchestra.

The Henry Clay People - For Cheap Or For Free

The Henry Clay People (Los Angeles, CA)

I haven't chimed in yet on just how fabulous the new Henry Clay People full length - For Cheap Or For Free because I am obviously biased. As you may remember I released a 7" vinyl single for the band's track " Working Part Time" in March of this year on JAXART Records (plug: buy it here please). My admiration for this band began with Blacklist The Kid With The Red Mustache and continues to this day.

Their rawkus live performances always seem to out-do the ones prior and it's impossible not to fall in love with their anthemic narrative tunes that everyone can relate to.

For Cheap Or For Free is definitely a record for for the masses ESPECIALLY in our current economic state. For Cheap Or For Free has songs about everything from being broke, to being frustrated, to being drunk, and struggling to get buy . The album is a perfect time capsule that I believe will go down as one of the definitive records for the East Los Angeles Music Scene.

For Cheap Or For Free includes the majority of tracks from their "Working Part Time" EP released earlier this year plus several live favorites including "Bull Through" and "Fine Print." Seriously though, It doesn't get any better than "This Ain't A Scene" - which already has my vote for "Song Of The Year" PERIOD.

[MP3] The Henry Clay People - This Ain't A Scene

The Henry Clay People will celebrate their record release TOMORROW NIGHT at Spaceland with good friends The Parson Red Heads, Le Switch, and the absolutely FABULOUS Downtown/Union. Pick up their new record at the show on Friday. The album will be available on iTUNES in November!

You can also catch singer/guitarist Joey Siara and Keyboardist Jillinda Palmer performing with The Monolators this Saturday at LA Weekly's Detour Fest. Monolators play at 12:45pm sharp!!!

Don't forget - you can still pick up a copy of their limited edition "Working Part Time" 7" Vinyl Single w/ Digital EP for just $7 bucks in the JAXART Store.

Video: Katy Perry - Hot N Cold

KATY PERRY (Los Angeles, CA)

OK, I have to give Katy Perry props. This video is deliciously fabulous. It reminds me of back when MTV actually played videos. The narrative tale of a bride out for revenge on her hot and cold would be life partner is absolutely entertaining. Dudes and dudettes, there's even a dance number with wedding dresses and baseball bats and break dancers. Its over the top pop genius.
