This Week In LA: This Week In LA: St. Vincent, The Album Leaf, Sea Wolf, Imaad Wasif, Mumford & Sons, Pocahaunted

Best Coast's Bobb Bruno & Bethany Cosentino

Hello everyone!
Hope you all had a wonderful weekend. Far too many exceptional shows last week including last night's NO CANCER! Benefit show with No Age, Vivian Girls, Best Coast, Graham Forest, Darker My Love and more. I do believe Bethany from Best Coast's performance as one of their most entertaining yet. As I have said several times before - watch out for that band.

Tons of great shows this week including St. Vincent at The El Rey which I have been looking forward to for MONTHS! Its been far too long since I've had my Annie fix. Her new video for for "Laughing With A Mouth Full Of Blood" is amazing.

Also this week Brit buzz band Mumford & Sons will play a SOLD OUT show at The Troubadour and The Album Leaf will play at the El Rey Theatre with Sea Wolf on Saturday. The Monolators will also play their first show ever at The Smell this Friday with Make Me from San Francisco!

Did we forget any shows? Add to the hype machine! Feel free to send us an email to

Side Project Mania: Discovery + Handsome Furs

[MP3] Discovery - Orange Shirt
[MP3] Discovery - Osaka Loop Line

Big thanks to The Tape for the heads up on Discovery - new side project of Vampire Weekend and Ra Ra Riot. I went to go see Clues (ex Unicorns and Arcade Fire) over the weekend and have come to realize that the incestuous nature of the indie music world can lead to some pretty great collaborations.

While I really am not a huge fan of either Vampire Weekend or Ra Ra Riot, Discovery is something that actually made my ears perk up. Their slightly twisted synth laced pop tunes are light-hearted and fun - just what a side project should be.

The band have an album coming out July 7th on XL Recordings (Vampire Weekend's Label).

Speaking of side projects - The Monolators will be opening for Handsome Furs on Thursday at The Echoplex. Handsome Furs is a side project of Dan Boeckner from Wolf Parade. We play at 8:30pm.

We will have a discount list for friends and family. If you would like to be on the list please send me and email with your full name by Thursday at Noon!!

The Day The Music Died - 50 Years Ago Today.

Buddy Holly

Today is the 50th anniversary of the tragic plane crash that took the lives of Ritchie Valens, JP "The Big Bopper" Richardson, and the legendary Buddy Holly. You can read all about the 50th anniversary right here.

To celebrate the memory of one of their favorite idols The Monolators have covered "Everyday" by Buddy Holly and have posted it for free download on their blog.

[MP3] The Monolators - Everyday (Buddy Holly Cover)

From Eli Monolator's Blog:

If you somehow haven't noticed, today is the 50th anniversary of Buddy Holly's death, along with Richie Valens and the Big Bopper. Buddy is obviously one of my biggest idols--I've always chased his style to various degrees of slavishness right from the beginning of the Monolators, we've covered "Rave On" in the past, and I've had a vague (and probably not to be pursued anytime soon) idea of covering "Well All Right" in the style of "I'm In Love With A German Film Star" by the Passions--that would be pretty good, right?

Instead we chose to mark this somewhat morbid occasion with a stab at "Everyday." Jillinda Palmer is on keyboards/synths and Ray from Maxwell Demon is on lead guitar. The clattering bits are drumsticks on our garage door, recorded and looped thru one of those little Casio synths that let you sample & play back yourself burping up and down the keyboard.

This video is hilarious - especially when the woman tells everyone to "Keep an open mind."

The Voyeurs + Go West Young Man Give Birth To New Albums!

The Voyeurs (Highland Park, CA)

[MP3] The Voyeurs - Things People Say

It's a season of change and last night the Echo was full of it. The Voyeurs and Go West Young Man both gave birth to new albums and cemented their status as two bands to watch in the burgeoning east side music scene. The show drew a large crowd who came early for energetic fervor of Les Blanks and stayed well after midnight for the twinkling indie rock of Go West Young Man.

It was also a bittersweet night as Tom Bogdon - guitarist for The Monolators played his last show with the band. I gave him a lot of shit on stage but in all honesty I'm REALLY going to miss playing with him. Don't worry he's not going anywhere. You can still see him performing with Shirley Rolls all around LA.

Be sure to pick up The Voyeurs new album "Well Known Drag" on iTUNES via JAXART Records or on 12" Vinyl and digital download card courtesy of the band's own Otik Records. Go West Young Man's record which is out now on One Cell Records.

I'm going to be out of commission next week and will try and program the site with plenty of content so you don't think I've disappeared off the face of the planet. If anyone feels like taking a stab a guest blogging shoot me an e-mail!

Show starts 9:30pm / all-ages / $5

Hi everyone!

There's so much to tell you all today that I'm sure I'm going to forget something--but, in a nutshell: tonight is the last night of our wonderful, beloved residency with Sean Carnage at Pehrspace, and this week's theme is, of course, prom! Did you know that "prom" is short for "promenade?" Well, it is!

Specifically it is the Winter Wonderland Formal Dance, and, as such, formal attire is requested (but we won't turn you away if you don't comply, you NON-COMPLIERS). It's $5 and all ages! We go on at midnight, but there are lots of other wonderful bands/activities tonight! Such as:

Milton Melvin Croissant
Dugout Canoe (from Denver)
Kevin Shields
Ema & the Ghosts
Cristina’s Puppet Show (yes, we did say PUPPET SHOW.)

And there's more! We have special corsage wristbands for the first 70 prom-goers...we have, as promised, HOMEMADE PRETZELS, and you all know what that means...and we also have the final installment of our homemade retrospective comps for sale. This time we're selling all four weeks' worth of music packaged together in one pop for fifteen bucks. LET ME REPEAT: this is almost our entire recorded output, plus extra stuff we never released, for fifteen clams!

And also as promised, we will have a slow dance jam for you all, a cover song that will also serve as our Song Of The Month for November. Shall we see you tonight?

The Monolators Residency Week One Videos

Cupcake The Bear Loves You!

Thanks to Miss Elaine Layabout Week 1 of The Monolators Residency at pehrspace is now available to view! The entire set is posted below.

Classical Geek Theatre broke the news yesterday that Spaceland Productions is asking Elaine to take down all her videos of local acts shot inside their venues which include Spacelad, The Echo, and The Echoplex. Read the post here. This really makes me upset.

Elaine's videos are shot with a simple still camera and while the video is not high quality it means the WORLD to bands around Los Angeles. She provides a service and a great deal of free promotion to the venues. She does not make any money off her videos so I honestly don't see what the harm in leaving these up when hundreds of cell phones videos from shows make their way onto the web everyday.

Starting today all her videos from the venues will be taken down. This will include footage from pretty much every local band in Los Angeles including footage from residencies for bands like Death To Anders, Rademacher, Mezzanine Owls, The PIty Party, Radars To The Sky, and CD release shows for Henry Clay People, and even The Monolators.

Spaceland as a public cry if you don't want people to shoot inside your venue without approval from now I'm fine with that. But PLEASE OH PLEASE OH PLEASE don't make Elaine take her videos down.

If this bothers you as much as it bothers me please speak up and let youre voice be heard.

Week Two: Rejection Inevitably Followed by Tears (2005-2006)

For our second week we examine the remainder of the Rejection strata and the metamorphosis of the trio format into a simple duo, resulting (among other things) in the document entitled Our Tears Have Wings. Whereas live performances of this epoch were strictly confined to drums and guitar, the historically-correct studio presence of von Bogdon is once again represented by the Marquis himself in live setting, and the gracious, post-contemporaneous contributions of Sir Dennis and Dr. Jex are faithfully depicted.

Of especial note is the aesthetic preference of the age for artifacts of outer space exploration, and the resulting (and uncharacteristically lengthy) dirge “Let’s Be Best Friends In Space” will be unearthed, although sadly without the accompaniment of a 350-member children’s choir as originally intended. The ensemble is also pleased to present the spirited holiday ode “Santa Claus Versus Dave Matthews.”

Message from Eli via his Feed Us A Live Insect Blog

Nestled somewhere 'twixt the Mezotonic Era, when spiders of terrible size and ferocity roamed the earth and carved out ocean bed and mountain range alike with their fiery breath, and the Present Time, wherein men and ladies of Science discovered the Secret of Electricity and the extra month after Christmas, lies the Age of the Monolator–when frail, sickly fops of terrible size and ferocity roamed the earth and carved out ocean bed and mountain range alike with their fiery breath. In this new, weekly exhibition, we attempt to uncover the true history of this little-known age, and reveal the civilizations and appurtenances that flourished therein.

Most scholars, barring a rogue and fanatic few, divide the chronology of the Monolators into four distinct dynasties, or epochs. We commence, therefore, at the beginning, and note that all dates, places, and musical depictions are strictly approximate.

Week One: Prehistory and Rejection (representing the years 2002-2004)

In this first exhibition, we review the dawn of the Era and the musical detritus remaining thereof. In this earliest incarnation the Monolators took a tri-fold form, with a standard drum and bass configuration (originally represented by Dr. Mary Chartkoff and her menial day laborer Eli respectively) augmented by the presence of an electric guitar, originally in the hands of the esteemed Sir Michael Dennis, whose performance tonight represents his first stage appearance in several years. [Editor's note: Although not technically correct in historical terms, for the purposes of enhanced fidelity we gladly note the presence of Dr. Ashley Jex and the Marquis Thomas von Bogdon on bass and electric guitar respectively. Dr. Mary will oversee the percussion ensemble while Eli will provide additional guitar chores and light caterwauling.] The major work of the period, Rejection Set Me Free, is broached, preceded by two minor compositions of slightly earlier vintage, the now almost totally obscure "Spandex Hitman" and "In My Dreams."

Also of note for the week is the unique recreation of the popular hymn, "Take It Outside," along with its beloved mascot, Cupcake The Bear. Cupcake will make a special appearance to assist in the celebration of birthday festivities for the Curator, Dr. Carnage. Light refreshments will be served.

The Monolators @ Spaceland. Photo By Ben Hoste

The only word I can use to describe Saturday's album release show for The Monolators - UMMWHAAAAAAAA?!?!?!?

Not 2 but NINE bass players playing "We Fell Dead" and Mary brought in a gong for "Don't Dance." The night was nothing short of incredible.

Tonight's The Night! Monolators CD Release Show

I took a red eye from New York City last night to get back to LA. Went straight from Webster Hall to th airport and after 5 hours of turbulence I'm ready to rock!!

TONIGHT is the long long long LONG long LOOOOOOONG awaited CD Release Show for The Monolator's new full length album - Don't Dance!!!! You have no idea how excited I am for people to finally hear it!

The album features yours truly on bass as welll as some tasty tidbits here and there throughout the 10 tracks.  Miss Wendy Wang of The Sweet Hurt and I even dabbled in  the production of the last song the "Don't Dance (Reprise)" which is a nod to classic 70s Disco and Funk. We used everything from handclaps, to wind chimes to bongos and a helluva lotta GONG.

Don't Dance is now available on iTUNES . You can purchase 12" vinyl of the release at tonight's show!

Detour and Eagle Rock Music Festivals Take Over Los Angeles TOMORROW!

The Monolators (Los Angeles, CA) will perform at LA Weekly's Detour Festival in Downtown LA tomorrow at 12:45pm

TOMORROW is going to be absolutely insane. LA Weekly's Detour Music Festival will be taking over downtown Los Angeles with performances from Gogol Bordello, The Mars Volta, Data Rock, Cut Copy and more. Meanwhile on the other side of the hill The Eagle Rock Music Festival will showcase over 60 of the best up and coming underground bands from across LA with performances from Crystal Antlers, Abe Vigoda, Light FM, Pizza!, Earlimart, The Flying Tourbillon Ochestra and Divisadero to name a few.

I'm going to be pulling double duty by doing BOTH festivals. As you may may remember The Monolators won the Detour Festival Battle of the Bands Competition and will be opening up the main stage at 12:45pm SHARP. After we perform we will be high tailing it over to the Eagle Rock Music Festival to perform with The Cobra Lilies - which features 3/4 Monolators as well as members of Divisadero, Amateurs, Smells Like Flan, and Ema and The Ghosts.

So which festival is better? I think it's a case of different strokes for different folks. The biggest difference between the two festivals: tickets to Detour are over $40 dollars while admission to the Eagle Rock Music Festival is completely and totally FREE OF CHARGE.

Les Blanks - Shoot The Horse

Les Blanks (Echo Park, CA)

Every so often I get a record in the mail from an LA local band that completely floors me. Last year it was The Henry Clay People's Blacklist The Kid With The Red Mustache. Before getting their press kit in the mail I'd only seen their name on concert calendars. Now they're one of my favorite bands PERIOD and I consider them good friends.

The latest record to join the club - Les Blanks (pronounced LESS Blanks for those who keep askin'). Their new album Shoot The Horse is available today and has been in regular rotation for me for about a month now.

It's really hard to describe exactly what they sound like because well - it sounds like a lil bit of everything. I was planning to write a full album review today but ran out of time (look for one tomorrow for sure). In the mean time here's the cliff notes - It's one of the best rock n' roll records I've ever heard.

They're giving away MP3s of the album for FREE on their website (they do ask for donations so please throw them a few bucks). Go download right now and see what all the fuss is about.

Les Blanks will celebrate their album release TONIGHT at Spaceland with performances from Correatown, Amateurs and The Monolators. You can pick up the album on CD AND Vinyl.

Course we all know how much I heart vinyl......

So What Do You Call This Scene We're In?

Mr. T's Bowl in Highland Park, CA. Photo by dirtyworldnews

I had a conversation just last night about the so-called "Highland Park Music Scene." There is no denying that there is something special happening on the other side of the LA River in music - in the last few months especially.

I don't know exactly to call this phenomenon and and it has been the root of many discussions usually ending in a stalemate. This scene seems to have found a home in venues such as Mr T's Bowl, Eagle Rock Lanes, and The Scene in Glendale. I like to think of it as the isle of mistfit toys - a group of bands, bloggers, and photographers who reside in the hills far from the Sunset Strip and even the uber cool neighborhood of Silverlake all bonding together over a love of rock n roll and mutual support. This is similar ideal that began with the Central Second Collective but in the last few months it seems to be taking on even bigger life of its own. Anyone want to take a stab at naming it?

This Saturday 10 of the best bands from Highland Park will be performing behind Zeppelin Music at the Highland Park Music Festival. The day long event starts at 1pm and will include performances from The Monolators, Pizza!, Fol Chen, Downtown/Union, and Seasons to name a few.

Admission is only $5 and All Ages. There will be live music, food, art, and poetry. Your donation ensures that this music scene is here to stay. I will be there all day long. Come out and hang!

Reasons I Love Eli and Mary Monolator

Homemade Birthday Pretzels!

Many of you know I play bass for The Cobra Lilies which includes Eli and Mary from The Monolators . Today at band practice they had a surprise for me. Mary made me home made birthday pretzels with an assortment of mustards!!!! Anyone close to me knows I have a crazy obsession with mustard. I will eat entire spoonfuls of it straight. It was the pahuuurfect birthday present.

The Cobra Lilies will be playing at Mr. Ts Bowl on March 22nd with Amnion, Tenlons Fort, Ema & the Ghosts, Avi Buffalo,The Sweet Hurt, and No Little Kindness. This lineup is certainly not to missed and I for one am stoked as hell to see Avi Buffalo and Ema & the Ghosts for the first time. The Cobra Lilies go on after midnight so if you can stick around that long you won't be disappointed.
